Conservatives To Bush: Fire Gonzales

www.time.com

In what could prove an embarrassing new setback for embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on the eve of his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, a group of influential conservatives and longtime Bush supporters has written a letter to the White House to call for his resignation.

The two-page letter, written on stationery of the American Freedom Agenda, a recently formed body designed to promote conservative legal principles, is blunt. Addressed to both Bush and Gonzales, it goes well beyond the U.S. attorneys controversy and details other alleged failings by Gonzales. "Mr. Gonzales has presided over an unprecedented crippling of the Constitution's time-honored checks and balances," it declares. "He has brought rule of law into disrepute, and debased honesty as the coin of the realm." Alluding to ongoing scandal, it notes: "He has engendered the suspicion that partisan politics trumps evenhanded law enforcement in the Department of Justice."

Finally, the GOP is realizing that Alberto Gonzales has become an anchor that needs to be cut loose before the whole "Ship of State" is pulled to the bottom of the political ocean with all hands on board. I do not believe that Bush can ignore the calls by his biggest and most vocal supporters to dump Gonzales; to turn a deaf ear would spell the end of any backing from staunch allies in the House.

Look for Gonzales to make a quick and stealthy exit, probably within the next week.

I don't think Boy King will want Abu Gonzales to step down, it will peel away another layer of the White House onion.

Below is a snip from a site I read they live blogged the Libby trial. They are also following the Alberto Gonzales appearances before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Questions for Gonzales: see comments

1) Who ordered the insertion of language into the Patriot Act re-authorization that allowed you to replace USA’s without Senate approval.
2) Why was this insertion kept secret?
3) Why was the person who inserted the language rewarded with a position as an USA?
4) When did the president ask you to replace some or all USA’s?
5) What did the president give you for criteria for selection of USA’s to fire.

He may not have much of a choice in the matter. The wording of the letter calling for Gonzales' ouster was very strong; Gonzales goes or else. Pretty much an ultimatum, IMHO. But who knows, W has never been accused of being the sharpest knfe in the drawer; maybe he is willing to cut his own political throat just so he can say, again, "Hey, I'm the decider".

And as if all that isn't enough...

More at Source: Democrats attack Gonzales, Supreme Court

Democrats running for president used a national meeting of trial lawyers on Sunday to attack other lawyers, pillorying Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and ridiculing recent decisions by the conservative-tilting Supreme Court.
"We want a president who will defend civil justice but we have one who is only listening to Alberto Gonzales justice," Illinois Sen. Barack Obama said at a presidential forum sponsored by the American Association for Justice, the trial lawyers group.
"We've got to have a different kind of attitude in this White House, one that respects the rule of law and recognizes that that is the essential tradition that has separated this country from so many others," Obama said.

Looks like Bush's actions to "stack the courts" in his favor is backfiring even harder...Sounds to me that this alone constitutes as an Impeachable Offense, due to Bush's elimination of various terms of the Constitutional "checks & balances" system.
