The theme songs from Wuthering Heights and Red Violin are by far the most haunting songs i've ever heard. Heres the links for them:

The band that I think has created some of the most haunting music ever has got to be The Residents.

Here are some selections:

From the Plains of Mexico

Bury Me Not

Jambalaya

No Bravery by James blunt, the lyrics were written while riding on the top of a tank through an area that had just been devastated by war. very hard hitting especially when seen live with the pictures on a screen behind the stage!!!

Actually, Dixie is just a short way of saying I Wish I Was in Dixie. And you are correct, it was the national anthem of the CSA. What some don't know is is that it was written in 1858 by Daniel Decatur Emmit in New York City. At the time it was a national hit. It was the unofficial anthem of the south until 1862 when Jefferson Davis declared it to be the Confederate national anthem. After the war was over, the US government made it illegal to play Dixie. But it sure has one catchy tune.

Thanks for posting the Youtube link to Dixie! I should have thought to look there instead of my usual poorly worded searches in Google.

The most amazing haunting song is a remix of Kelis' Trick Me.

Kelis (ft. Iron & Wine and Massive Attack) - Massive Winter Trick.

It's a pain to find a copy of it, I don't even know how it got on my computer but I'm in love with it.

I have an unusual favorite song. Its mine personaly, not the 'best of all time'! Its a version of Sarah McLachlan's "Possession"! This version was used in a two part episode "Victoria's Secret" of the Canadian TV show, "Due South"! Its just her and her piano and THE most haunting, emotionaly charged song I have ever heard. I'm not one to get teary eyed with music unless its the classics, but this song brings tears and strong feelings within me. If you get the chance, listen to it. Its worth it!

Heres the version I am talking about:had trouble with the link!!

Lyrics: Possession

Listen as the wind blows
from across the great divide,
Voices trapped in yearning,
memories trapped in time,
The night is my companion
and solitude my guide,
Would I spend forever here
and not be satisfied,

And I would be the one
to hold you down,
kiss you so hard,
I'll take your breath away
and after I'd wipe away the tears,
Just close your eyes dear

Through this world I've stumbled
so many times betrayed,
Trying to find an honest word,
to find the truth enslaved,
Oh you speak to me in riddles and
you speak to me in rhymes
My body aches to breathe your breath,
your words keep me alive,

And I would be the one
to hold you down,
kiss you so hard,
I'll take your breath away
and after I'd wipe away the tears,
Just close your eyes dear

Into this night I wander,
it's morning that I dread,
Another day of knowing of
the path I fear to tread,
Oh into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride,
Nothing stands between us here
and I won't be denied,

And I would be the one
to hold you down,
kiss you so hard,
I'll take your breath away
and after I'd wipe away the tears,
Just close your eyes dear...

Great thread !

Many great tunes here but here's my contribution:

Iron Maiden - Hallowed be thy name (the intro is the most chilling I've ever heard)

Simple Minds - Belfast child (GREAT SONG! I think it has a very eerie touch to it all the way through... )

THAT was incredible. Haunting, as promised.

I had never heard of this performer before your post (see what growing up in a house trailer can do to one's cultural education? *smiling*)...thank you for sharing that beautiful performance.
