"Venus in Furs" by the Velvet Underground:

"Marquee Moon" by Television (my favorite song of all time):

I love that band. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. Granted, it would take a crazy perfectionist lead singer and guitarist, a rhythm guitarist who had received electro-shock therapy, a heroin-addicted bassist, and one of the best drummers in punk music...

Most of the music I have is nothing but haunting or depressing stuff.
Here's some suggestions, I highly recommend them. The most haunting music on this list is by an ambient band from Iceland, Sigur Ros.

Home of the Brave - Spiritualized

Over the Pond - Album Leaf (Feat. Sigur Ros)

Lover's Spit (Redux version) - Broken Social Scene

Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl - Broken Social Scene

Girls - Death In Vegas

Have You Passed Through This Night? - Explosions In the Sky

Teardrop - Massive Attack

Now I Let Go - Moby

We Have a Map of the Piano - Mum

Street Spirit (Fade Out) - Radiohead

Svefn-G-Englar (Sleepwalkers) - Sigur Rós

Golden Hair - Slowdive

Rabbit In Your Headlights - U.N.K.L.E. (Feat. Radiohead)

First Breath After Coma - Explosions In the Sky

***I can go on and on and list so many, but I really don't have time at the moment. I recommend you all have a listen to each and every one of these songs, you will not be disappointed. Most of them are available thru iTunes or "other" alternative download services.

Saw this thread and wondered what songs I know would be most haunting. Sure theres all the classics but I was thinking of something more modern haha

Anyways, this song is by Sneaker pimps and its called How Do. Its from a great film The Wickerman staring Edward Woodward. The best version of this song on youtube is set to a home video of the Wickerman festival, its looks quite good actually, just let the song play to the end, its done quite well!

Anyone heard of Mulu? I find a lot of her stuff haunting but not sad, great talent this chick, shes a scouser too! (not that I am but I live in scouse land)

Mulu - desire (first time I seen the vid!)

Mulu - Pussycat (vid cracked me up)

Good thread....There are three that come to mind right now..

1) Hurt...Johnny cash version..Especially when you watch the video...Kinda sinks in

2) Where the streets have no name ...U2....I dont know why

3)Amazing Grace....Especially to a single bag pipe....Always brings goose bumps...

I have always found Lustmord's remix of Tool's Schism to be haunting. It's long, about 18 minutes, and is split into two videos the entire of which I believe was produced by the Brothers Quay.

I also think that Lycia has a haunting atmosphere to their songs.

I find this one by Dire Straits to be more "haunting."

Dire Straits - Your Latest Trick

I use to listen to this song on the radio when I was young and it is a sad song about dying and saying goodbye to the people that were a part of his life. Written and sung by: Terry Jacks.

Acid Bath - New Death Sensation

Someone used this as the audio for a collage of nuke footage... I think that makes it seem all the more creepy and haunting. Since embedding that video is disabled by request, I'll just provide the link: New Death Sensation.

Here's a song that sent chills up my spine the first time I heard it more than fifty years ago.

It was released first by the Sons of the Pioneers in 1948 and has been covered many times.

Here's the original "Cool Water."
