JERUSALEM - Iran is making defensive preparations for what it fears will be a US military attack this summer, Israel’s military intelligence chief said on Sunday.

Major-General Amos Yadlin also told the Israeli cabinet that Lebanon’s Hezbollah guerrillas and Syria believed they could be targeted in any U.S.-initiated war against Iran, an Israeli government official said, briefing reporters on his remarks.

‘What we are seeing is their preparation for the possibility of war in the summer. My assessment is that they are defensive preparations for war,’ Yadlin was quoted as saying, referring to Iran, Syria and Hezbollah.

The government official said Yadlin spoke about Iranian fears of a U.S., not an Israeli, offensive.

The official gave no details about the type of military preparations Yadlin said Iran was making to meet any US attack.

‘We are closely monitoring these preparations because (Iran, Syria and Hezbollah) could misinterpret various moves in the region,’ Yadlin said, according to the official.

In Washington on Thursday, US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said the United States was ‘convinced diplomacy is the way to proceed’ to curb Iran’s nuclear programme.

Burns told the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee that Washington did not believe conflict with Teheran was inevitable.

The UN Security Council widened sanctions against Iran on March 24 after it defied a second deadline to stop enriching uranium, a process Teheran says will yield solely electricity but world powers fear could be used to build atomic weapons.

Washington and London also accuse Iran of supporting insurgents fighting their forces in Iraq.

Kinda puts all the "tuff talk" by Iran into perspective. Its all smoke and mirrors with them. The poker game is about at its end..

So what are the general views by the ATS members here on this? Will the US attack Iran this summer regardless if Iran gives back the british hostages?

Either way its been 28 years in the making. sooner or later its going to spill over.

Also this kind of puts the kidnappings of british soldiers into perspective. Perhaps Iran is using them as chest pieces, thinking we wont attack so long as they have them?

Iran simply knows that it's neighboring country was invaded. The invaders repeatedly refused Iranian help in Iraq, at the same time as blaming Iran for much of it.
Iran, running low on oil reserves, is looking toward Nuclear power plants as a viable option, the US and Britain have repeatedly told them they are simply not allowed to enrich the Uranium necessary for their nuclear power plants. Hence, they are pretty much telling Iran they are not allowed to survive economically. Nuclear fuel really is the only viable alternative left to them in order to keep their electricity grid in a shape that can support their economy.
It is because of these things that Iran views the US and Britain as hostile toward them.

They are doing what any other country would do with a hostile presence at their doorstep... preparing for battle.

Where did you come up with Iran is running low on oil reserves? In fact they have some of the largest untapped oil reserves.

You're right, the US, Britain, and the UNSC said they can't enrich uranium in Iran. But they can do it OUT of Iran. Russia even said they would enrich uranium and send it back to Iran for them. Yet that isn't good enough. Maybe because if it was enriched outside of Iran, it wouldn't be weapons-grade material.

Iran best hope the United States does not attack.. and leaves the target points to Israel.
After the Iraq conflict and indiscriminate killings by Muslim extremists, under their leaders referring to the sixth century--old book. Israel may best be suited to deal with all things nuclear at Iran.

China has got a head twist lately in soon to be initiated Duties of there exported products to the USA. Russia only wants their money from Iran for all the weapons delivered. Syria?? not a clue. Perhap's HL Pelosi will elaborate on this?
