I knew there was something fishy about the Nootka Convention.

The Argentines nullified the treaty themselves in 1831!

Argentine Warships broke the treaty by sezing US sealing boats. The US retaliated by destroying the Argie colony on the Falklands.

As the Argentines were the inheritors of the Spanish and also the US, seeing as the Nootka Conventions pertained to the Pacific Northwest primarily where Spain (and then the US) had land, the treaty was deemed broken by Argentina and LEGALLY the islands ownership reverted back to Britain.

After independence from Spain, Argentina established a penal colony at port Louis.

In 1831 the port Louis and the penal colony were destroyed by US warships for breaking and nullifying the nootka convention by seizing US sealing boats.

As Argentina had broken the convention, their right to the islands had been abrogated and legally the islands reverted to British ownership.

The British began a civilian settlement in 1833.

The Island's coat of arms is a sheep atop a ship, to represent the islands main economic activity. The Blue wavy lines are the Sea. Doesn't look a thing like the Argie flag.

please explain what you mean by one form or another? If prior claim was legal then the UN would never back a current british claim.

You advocating invasion? or a political solution?

Lets get one thing straight would the families of argentinian seviceman be prepared to loose thousands of their sons before they even set foot on land? (not the best way of winning an election) there is no way Argentina could just board a few ships and Aircraft and just stroll in this time.

As long as the people of the islands want to be british then there will be no political solution.

This is probably the only time i would say this but thank god for the french you see n.a.t.o. would probably step in in conjunction with the usmc and the sas spereheading the operation to defend the falklands.Britan has had a shake up of its armed forces into smaller groups so its more flexible and this would suit them down to the ground and your forgetting the territorial army theyd love some experiance. who knows maybe even italy and germany would get involved in iran while britan was in the falklands i dunno its improbbabble but... not impossible.

watch it and see just how the conscripts felt when the Scots Guards attacked with bayonets and grenades the reinforced postion.

I wont thank the French for anything, they are one reason why the Falklands were rather costly for the Royal Navy.

At the time the UK Didnt have Exocet as i said above it was developing its own system.

I dont think for a second the french would knowing sell weapons that would be used against an ally. especially since entente cordial, military relations between the 2 countries have been amicable especially since britain backed france in the suez crisis. The 2 countries have many differences of politcal opinion but i think they are learning that there is a symbiotic relationship in the modern world. Especially with britains main contribution to the EU being as a buffer between europe (especially the french) and the USA.

Well I say 'France', but most point the blame at Private French arms dealers.

Alot of the residents go to uni and training courses in the UK, and then fly back.

Not one of them wants to be under Argentinian rule.

Another not so well known fact was that there where civilian (BAE emplyees i think) staff on the warships trying to get sea wolf running with mixed results it seems.

You're wrong there. There's roughly 1.6 million people in N.Ireland and of them about 1 million consider themselves British. It's only a minority (a very vocal minority) that want N.Ireland to become part of the Republic of Ireland.

According the Good Friday agreement however as soon as a majority of people want to have a united Ireland then it'll happen. Nobody's being forced to remain British.

perhaps a bit of reading would be in order - the vast majority that you speak about were imported protestant scots, brought in to make sure that the economic centres remained in "loyal" hands.

As far as the Falklands go, well, I'm a believer in democracy and if they vote to stay British, then thats what they are - as to what we could do about it if they decided to invade? I think that this time we would get U.S. support, given the scope and nature of the support that we have given the U.S.
