A piece I wrote a few years back that I just discovered.
Was written for a philosophy class.
"Self-Realization"
We have no founding fathers. We likewise have no nurturing mothers. We are the generation that was abandoned at birth. Given life only to know the
worst of pain. To find happiness in life is simply to find meaning in the suffering.
We know nothing of the true evils of the world, having no guide we stumble blindly. We create monsters in our minds to become afraid of, yet we are so
terrified that they exist we give birth to them in order to master them. Setting our fears loose on our enemies only means they attack us with theirs.
Now we have a new fear; the two old fears combined. This is what is known as a 'joint' fear, when everyone has the same fear. Unfortunately the fear
gripping us now is our own fear, but not the one we created. Suddenly a new fear is born, not being in control of fear.
This goes on and on until someone realizes that in the beginning there was no fear. In the beginning there was no enemy and there was hardly enough
people to say "we". But now we are lost in our own self pity, thinking of those wild things we created so long ago. One day someone realizes that
all of this fear and suffering is nothing new, it is the same fear we created in the beginning. It is all our own fault, we did it and we reap what we
sow.
Deep within our own minds, not in the subconscious... no it's far deeper that that. The place we locked up long past. The place that needs a key
buried in the woods --- yes, only 'a' key, for we know many are out there --- so it could not be unlocked even by generations to come. The mind
still knows where it is buried, how far this way, how far that, how many granules on top. We need that key to unlock this place so that we may realize
that fear did in fact exist in the beginning. Not fear of some deadly creature, but in loneliness.
Now as the many fears gobble up the rest of humanity the truth hits us all, we are only human and should never have tried to play God. For this grave
error we are all doomed to die alone, cold and alone. We live alone and we die alone, secrets must be kept from everyone but not to save another, but
rather to save ourselves. Alone and afraid we huddle together, yet still alone, in a dark corner and pray for the dawn that will never come. Finally
we all realize, the last thing we do before we die, is inhale.
