Bush full of praise for NZ

stuff.co.nz

Prime Minister Helen Clark met Bush and US Vice-President Dick Cheney at the White House this morning for a half hour meeting in the President's oval office followed by lunch in the state dining room

"I assured her that our government wants to help in any way we can.

"We understand some of the countries there have got some difficult issues that requires New Zealand's leadership, with US help, to help solve the problems, with Australian leadership as well."

The Bush admin has realised the value of allies even if you don't agree with them all the time. It is a pity that the Bush admin came to this realisation far to late. As for a greater US role in the Pacific that's an idea that should be left alone until the Bush admin has left office. We have seen the mess that was created in Iraq.

I don't see much of a change in position here at all. I think we've always considered New Zealand a friend and partner in the region, but we can't be real true allies if our ships aren't allowed in NZ ports.

P.S,: Is that just a bad pic, or is the NZ prime minister really that ugly???

Fair point about the ships .
I think its more of a subtle shift in the Bush admin towards looking back towards old allies and friends after the Iraq fiasco rather then any great change in the NZ - US relationship.
Personally I don't agree with the Nuclear ban but I'm in the minority.

That isnt the best photo of Helen I guess she isnt very attractive.

Actually on wikipedia she looks pretty good. I just don't think that was a good picture. Bush looks weird in it too.

It's a shame Australia didn't take the wise stand of the NZ government vis a vis a vis Iraq.

As an an expat kiwi, I want to know why he's brown nosing our Prime Minister. The look on her face suggests he won't be getting too much.
