Louisiana Governor Won't Run for Reelection

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco, whose popularity plummeted after two hurricanes devastated south Louisiana less than halfway through her first term, announced Tuesday that she won't seek re-election.

The decision will enable her to get what she called important initiatives through an upcoming legislative session without having to worry about political considerations.

I don't think she'd have a prayer at winning a statewide general election again, so she's falling on her sword to give another Dem a chance I guess.

More Katrina fallout...

Nice to see she's smarter than I thought she was during the whole Katrina fiasco...or her handlers are.

She stood a snowballs chance of winning reelection, so as you said, she's falling on her sword like the good party apparatchik she's always been.

Thats what they said about Nagin and look what happened.
She could win. Anybody could. Louisianna doesnt seem to care about much outside of Mardi Gras.

You know, I'd forgotten about Mr. Nagin. I withdraw my snowballs chance remark and edit it to say: "It's anybodies race."

Totally. That porn star that ran in California should have a go at Louisianna.
While we're at it we could toss Gary Coleman in too.

The politics of New Orleans is a totally different animal than the politics of the state as a whole.

She won on a razor thin margin last time, I couldn't imagine her winning a second term after all her blanco-ups w/ Katrina.

The big deal now in Louisiana is that former Senator John Breaux may seek the governorship. One big problem though, John Breaux abandoned Louisiana and now resides in Maryland. He is talking with the Attorney General now to see what his options are.

Hopefully Louisiana looks to the future and not the past when selecting its next governor. John Breaux did nothing for Louisiana while he was in the Senate, and left the state when he retired from the Senate.
