I too have ringing in my ears, but I'm not really sure if it's constant as I don't always notice it.
I've not had my hearing checked but can hear very small quiet things.

I do have a LOT of trouble with people talking softly and indistinctly.
Thankfully, man DVDs have subtitles for the hearing impaired.

So, my the sheer number, what could be the reason many of us have ringing in our ears

I live with a constant ringing in my ears as well. I attribute it to too much loud music and to firing a shotgun once too often without hearing protection. Any noise will usually drown it out and luckily my hearing is otherwise normal.

Is it, like, when you sit in a quiet room, you hear a high pitched ringing. but it's not in your ears? It feels like you're hearing it, but you aren't really hearing it?

Then, at some points, for no reason at all, it will get loud and everything else will sound muffled?

I experience the same thing. I have no clue what it is and no doctor has been able to explain it.

You're not alone. I get them too. I also get the spikes out of no where.

Fortunately, I really only notice it when I A, try to think about it, or B, sit in a quiet room.

However, I also score high on my hearing tests, and it doesn't impair me much.

If it does get worse, I'll see a doctor again.

Yeah I get it. I thought it was Tinnitus.

I hear a loud high pitch sound.

I've been hearing this for about 5 years now. I don't have it constantly but when I do it sounds like it is inside of my head, not my ears.

Mine is very loud and high.

Most Doctor's won't even acknowledge it they give you a quite ear test and say your ears are fine. After going to other Doctor's any test they ran came back fine.

The best I can explain it is high pitched frequency 24/7. During the day when I am busy I can usually tune it out but when I am settled somewhat it is annoying.

My pitch doesn't change very often but when it does I start to check for any unusual earth things on the net.

I also am "allergic to metals." If metal touches my skin it either reddens and bumps up and itches or it gets dry and scaly then the skin breaks and you get a clear drop of clear liquid., yucky

It's often caused by a zinc deficiency in your body, or if you have taken a large blow to the head or from exposure from loud noises. There are all-natural treatments available that have no side affects, and I know coz I'm taking them now as I'm typing .
(I've had tinnitus since i was about 8).

Sometimes the ringing in the ears phenomenon is tantamount to an impending heart attack/stroke. I certainly suggest you go see a doctor and have that checked out.

I get a ringing also, but when I turn my computer monitor/TV off it goes away

My sister has the same problem and she got much better after she started to take iron pills.

One of the possible causes of that problem is mild anaemia, so after experimenting the iron pills or sometimes iron syrup the problem almost disappeared.

That's exactly what happens to me! It gets really bad when I dive underwater, too!

Several years ago, my sisyer developed a strange clicking in her ear (not ringing, but bear with me). If you put your ear beside hers, you could hear it. After several months with the NHS, it was discovered that it had been caused by a change in medication. She changed back, and it disappeared within 24 hours.

Had you changed/started any course of pills when this started?

i ´ve heard that a tinitus can come from a depression.
maybe that can help.

This is interesting as when I was younger my mind used to run riot with all sorts of possibilities as to what these noises or 'sensations' could be - good in a way cos its left me open minded enough to enjoy thinking about alternative explanations to various things.

The unusual earth things is a great way to loose your mind in thought for a while - after finding out that you can tune into the big bang left over RF (ie cosmic background noise) on radios etc my eyes were very wide open. I felt I was an incredibly tiny part of a huge universe (in a good way!) and that I am connected to everything in some way.

It was probably just coincidence, but on the day of that big earthquake in Pakistan I had a rather strange day. Not having seen the news first, I allowed a few minor problems at the place I was working to suddenly build into me walking out within 10 mins of arriving, leaving the kitchen in chaos (I was chef) and giving my self 1 week to vacate my little flat (rented from my boss). Suffice to say I usually consider my actions a little more than that day. On seeing that there was a lot of ongoing suffering goin on over there in the remote places, mud slides etc the next few days were very strange. Lots of ringing, but like I say, prob coincidence, and as I was not working lots of alcohol was consumed - which never helps!

I would love to be able to put the ringing down to something like Spider Sense!! But realistically I'm 60-70% sure its medical (no brain tumours pls!) Although I do think the electro magnetic soup we are all forced to live in every day could play a very big part. Could this be our brains way of trying to interpret something that is only just on the edge of some people’s perception? I know I find it hard to define my sensations as ringing, that’s just a quick convenient way of discussing it with others.

Many good sugggestions it is said also that a tumor can cause ringing but it would only be in one ear.

I was on iron pills for anemia but it didn't take the ringing away.

Let me tell you somethings friends be very careful when you go to the Doctor's and if anything major is up always get more then two opinions.

I worked in the medical field for ten years and not only Doctor's but hospitals scare the shi&&&&&& out of me.

I've had ringing since 1989. Cause by an airplane trip, popped my ears then got virus within days. Sick with vertigo for weeks then gradually mellowed out. Have constant ringing barely noticeable to very noticeable. Doc said caused by the virus and popping ear drum. Have to live with it for now.
