It can't "disappear" because it's expressed in percentages. It can get shorter though if you were to abstain from posting for a while, and the "top poster" continued to post at a rate for the same given time. The scale is different, because the scale grows all the time...

As for the black bar I've always thought it to be rather non-informative. Now you'll have learn a little about members by going to their profile if you want applause information. That's good I think.

And to me the size of a postbar was/is rather "non-informative". Quantity tells me nothing. And that's why IMHO that the postbar is currently a bit "pointless".

Close enough.

The bar represents a percentage of your posts against the member with the highest number of posts.

Don't mean to be negative Skeptic but....

Doesn't that totally go against a main principle of ATS??

Quality over Quantity

It appears that if I want to fill my bar I can do so by posting 28 times a day more than the person that posts the most, and it doesn't matter what the content so long as I make posts.

I have to say I really really don't like that idea....

I think this new bar will increase the total number of posts, sacrificing content quality.

One thing is for certain... my percentage maybe small in comparison to the jobless ATS addict but when I have time to post I ALWAYS have something to say. Unlike some members (not naming anyone) that post tons of uninformed and almost childish posts.

In addition, as I believe Gemwolf mentioned.... This new formula means that I go away on holiday come back to discover my bar has actually got SHORTER.....

How can that be a good thing??

I'm confused by this move Skeptic... Can you at least explain why you made this change??

All the best,

NeoN HaZe.

It's already been explained several times in this thread. It's a performance issue, querying for the amount of applauses slowed down the thread pages.

Anyway, the length of the bar has always been related to the number of posts, only the color indicated "quality" (as measured by # of applauses). But apparently unless and until the database schema is changed, that information will no longer be available in the miniprofiles. However, you can now see exactly how many applauses you or anyone else has gotten by looking at the user's extended profile page.

Cos it cant be the views to my measly 13 threads... can it?? And whats the 'Flagged' counting? Is that how many flags that my 'Threads Started' have?

It's the total views on the threads you've started. Your Starbuck's thread alone has over 14064 views. You can see these stats here.

Yup

Woohoo, go my Starbuck's thread! Curious, that link to my authored threads, it only shows 8 when my total says 13... does that mean the missing 5 are in BTS and PTS? Strange as I only remember maybe authoring 2 in BTS and I dont remember posting a thread in PTS at all.

I have to agree with NeonHaze here.

All you are doing is encouraging those who pretty much soak this board with their insane twaddle about reptilians/ higher beings etc. You know the kind I'm talking about. But then one persons twaddle is anothers factual information.

The new post bar/ post counts box just looks a bit cheap. Like an afterthought.

But at the end of the day does it really matter? It'll still be the same site with the same people which is what makes this place 'this place'.

Actually you're right, your threads listed isn't the amount stated. I just counted mine, in fact I copied them to excel, to cut out human error, and it says 98, where my page state 118.

Now I was at it I summed up my flags as well, and it was 246, where my page states 261. A little reversed quantity discount!???

Computers don't count wrong, they say ...is it a bug then?

I don't agree that this is encouraging people to post "crap" just to lengthen their bar. If they do so they'll be banned far before any appreciable gain, and, like I said before, the length of the bar ALWAYS depended just on post count.

However, if you look at the number of posts of the highest posters here:

www.abovetopsecret.com...

You can see that the number of posts about halves from just the #1 to the #20, even though there about 105,000 total registered users. That really does skew the data, making it hard for most people to come anywhere close to filling the bar.

For example, if you look at my bar, it looks about 50% full, even though I'm the #23rd most prolific poster out of 105,000.

I'd posit again the idea of making it more statistically based, at least a percentile ranking to better represent the data.

Exactly. Statistically it's next to impossible for a new member to even begin "growing his bar" if he were to post at the same rate as Gazrok.

Actually it's easy enough to get a lengthy bar without anyone raising an eyebrow. The answer is of course BTS. Although now that a ban has been placed on the General Chat games, it would be a bit more difficult than it was a month ago...

According to my calculations, each pixel on the bar (out of a total of 140) now represents 137 posts. So hundreds and hundreds of posts would be required to get it to move noticeably. I don't think anyone could get away with that in a short period of time, even on BTS.

Does this mean that the Google search will be making a comeback?

I think thats computer speech for how the system makes the page look, not how the boolean search or anything works. It queries the database of posts, presumably searches for the ones listed to be in this thread (or any other that you view) and shows them once it loads them.

At least, I think thats a translation.

Thanks apex. If i remember correctly, the Google search was removed as it was potentially a cause for the sporadic loading problems. I was just wondering, if the problem has now been tracked to coding, if it would be making a return.

Yeah, I think the members who pointed out the maths involved behind the new red bar kinda makes the bar pointless - thats maths for ya!

This reminds me of the daycare center my son used to be in.

The children were all whining about what sort of treat the staff gave them, so the staff quit giving out treats.

SO implied that if complaining continued, the bars would be gone all together. While I liked the old bar, the new bar was better than no bar at all.

If all the whining has resulted in permanent removal of the bar, thanks a lot whiners for messing it up for me and the others who appreciated the work that was being done on this site.

At least for now, the bar is gone, congratulations, now knock it off.
