The spartans did know it was a last stand. The 300 held the Persians off for 3 days, which stopped the Persian army from flooding wildly across greece. The only reason the Persians managed to break the pass in three days was because of a greek traitor told the Persians of another route around the spartans so the persians had them surrounded. The three days however allowed the remaining greeks to retreat and regroup. It also allowed the time needed for the greek navy to assemble and attack the Persian navy. This naval battle was the Battle of Salamis and it was the turning point in the war. The last stand of the 300 was vital to the entire victory.
