Very nice, where exactly did you get that AK from? I haven't found anything nearly that cheap around here (central NY) or online.

I am building an AR-15 currently. I have my lower so far; and will be ordering the other pieces shortly. I plan to go with a skeleton stock, fluted 16" barrel and MI style hand guards.

After that I'm going to build a varmint gun with a 20" barrel for hunting. The .223 round is great for medium size game including coyotes. I've even considered using it for deer.

Someone asked if building your own gun made it legal. You have to register your lower receiver and then everything else becomes a question of your state's own weapons laws. NY for instance has their own version of the ban that did not sunset when the federal ban did. Check with your own state for their version (if any). NY and California are the two strictest I believe.

You can take a legal gun and make it illegal very quickly. Depending on your state, things like threaded barrels, foregrips and bayonet lugs cross the line. In NY, we can have one or the other but not two or more. I'm going with the threaded barrel so I can swap out flash suppressors at my whim. With my choice of handguards I can simply take the foregrip off if necessary.

I also have one of the last 30 round pre-ban clips from eaglefirearms. They ran out after my order shipped. I should have ordered more. This doesn't matter for most states; but it does for NY.

I also have a fondness for Russian hardware. I have a 1941 and 1944 91/30 Mosin Nagants. The 7.62x54 round is a really sweet round. While not quite Russian, I have a Yugo SKS that's a real good shooter. I've been eyeballing the AK but looking for a semi with more power behind hit. Panther .308's have got my attention but are high dollar!

you should post a pic of your mosin nagant.

Your SKS might be yugo, but all those designs originated in russia

I bought it at a local guns and knives store. You can get the WASR-10 from the shotgun news for $329.00. But since you live in NY, that could be a problem.

Drive to another state and buy the magazines at a gun show.
they can stop you from buying out of state guns, but I doubt they can stop you from buying magazines.

So, if you build an assault rifle in NY, its legal?

I understand the registration, thats pretty much standard if you dont have the permit.

Hi Xphiles, sorry I did not mean your comments I meant others members. AS for gun realated deaths I think the current figure is 30,000 a year with another 65,000 being injured by firearms. (Harvard Gazette)

I'm not against gun ownership especially in the US as it is an important part of your constitution but I think there should be stricter control and storage of personal weapons.

The problem is Magicmushroom is that the majority of those deaths are gang - drug related.. and they are not very likely to go sign up for a license.. infact most buy their guns via black market or from other drug dealers who most likely stole theirs.

Gun control does not curb gun related deaths. If guns where removed, the method of killing would still be guns. Criminals do not abide by laws?

The other majority of deaths is family related.. a crime of passion that would be carried out by any means possible. I knew a girl who was killed, along with her family by her step father with an axe. Brutal murder, I have seen dozens of cases where people kill others with swords and such as well... if someone wants to kill .. they will find a way.

You can build one using parts from one or more vendors; but the lower has the serial number and must be transferred to an FFL who can then transfer it to you. I learned that Bass Pro Shop will not charge any transfer fee. That can be a nice $20-50 savings.

Since NY has their own supplemental version of the AWB, the federal sunset means nothing to us. Ours does not expire. So, you can have one of the following; but not two or more:
- Folding or collapsible stock
- Threaded barrel or flash suppressor (if you have the threaded barrel it's assumed you would put on a suppressor)
- Foregrip
- Bayonet lug
- Grenade launcher (I'd gladly take this if I could get my hands on an M203)

Here is a good wiki page that details some of the different states that have their own AWB legislation.

I am using rails on my hanguards so I can remove the foregrip if necessary, like if I actually shoot an intruder in my house. I am going with the flash suppressor as my one "allowed" characteristic.

Funny thing about the 30 round or 20 round clips is that now that the federal ban has sunset, there is no law requiring magazine producers to date stamp their magazine. Pre-ban mags typically did not have a datestamp so it was easy to know if yours was pre-ban. So in NY, you can still get in trouble with a true pre-ban clip just because the state has no way of verifying its age. So, I will carry a receipt with the gun case...

Got to love NY...

What is the point of owning anything other than what you need.
why own a porsche when a escort will get you there.

Try some thinking about what is not included on the television news formats or the newspaper/public education. Also leave out the drama techniques.

And XphilesPhan...keep them in the X ring.

Thanks,

Orange,

Firstly my comment was for Xphiles as this is his thread

Get a grip and a sense of humour!!!

Xphiles had been contemplating buying an Uzi and had asked for feedback on a earlier thread, if you'd bothered following the link I provided you'd know this, and as Xphiles is one of the most conservative posters I know I made a tongue in cheek comment about "Soviet rifle... extremists"

Take a chill pill dude!

P.S. I'll be as dramatic as I like, thanks!

Xphiles,

Take care with the rifle, just a question what do you use for hunting?

Congrats on your new Ak. My dad recently bought a Mosin-Nagant at out sporting goods store. Nice weapon,we've both been waiting for an Lee-Enfield to go on sale. Seems like when we have the cash for it,its not on sale, and vice versa. Went with a friend to pick up his new Remington 870 shotgun. I like it,got to fire it also. Was my first time using a shotgun. For the anti-gun ppl who havent used firearms, the force and power that you recieve just from firing the weapon makes you not want to have to use it against someone.

Ak-47's are great weapons, you're lucky to have one. I look forward to owning one someday......unless california gets weird and decides to ban them

I thought california had already banned the rifle?

I agree with you completely on not wanting to have to use it on a person. I dont ever want to have to shoot anybody, its just... ugh.... not a pleasant thing to think about. You cant help but feel compassion enough to absolutely use the rifle as a LAST resort, and I mean like having your life threatened. Anyway, enough of that.

Jimmy1880, I cant use this rifle for hunting in my state despite the lax gun laws. The terrain is too flat for this kind of rifle to be used off of a gun range. I use a 12 guage with a slug barrel for deer hunting and a skeet choke tube for bird hunting.

As for it being a soviet weapon, that doesnt bother me at all. I figure its better to get all those weapons out of the old soviet union to prevent them from getting into terrorist hands, better to have them in the US than in Iraq, right?

Also, there are alot of good firearms made outside the US for a really unbeatable price. For an american AR-15, I could buy at least 2 of these rifles with all the fixing and some ammo, if not 3. I also have a fascination with soviet era equipment. My generation was the first to grow up without the threat of the soviet union, I was 6 when the USSR feel apart, so I dont quite view them as my father and grandfather did, conservative or not.

nice ak. the romanian ones are good. does it fire NATO rounds? .22?

alot of non russian ak's use the NATO round nowadays...surely a reason for it im sure.

I used to want an ak 47 SO bad. It is the symbol of so much in the world and in history, its such an iconic 'resistance' gun. But lately, i've changed my opinion slowly to wanting an AR-15 style gun instead, which is the semi auto version of the military M-16's right? Those are made by Bushmaster for the Army right?

Just ask any palestinian terrorist if they got their hands on an M-16 if they'd use it or not. I saw a TV documentary about a Fatah squad in Gaza led by a young man that prized an M-16 over all his other guns, including multiple AK's.

Very nice rifle! I have been looking around for one of the SARs but all I seem to be able to find are WASRs.

Stock up on ammo, 7.62x39 is getting hard to come by. Thats why I chose a domestic caliber for my AK. 5.56x45NATO.(.223)

RuneTang, I'd get an AK BEFORE getting an AR if I were you. AKs need very little maintenence, and are very functional, AR-15s are... well, they are a little bit finicky. The operation of an M16/AR15 blows the gasses from the spent round directly onto the boltface, causeing fouling on the most important part of the action. As you can see from my AK above, if having the .223 round is that important to you, then you can get that in an AK. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks.

They stopped importing the SARs and Im pretty sure they dont manufacture them anymore. The receivers on the SARs are a bit better than the WASR which sometimes have feeding problems, but are still good guns.

The 7.62x39mm ammo is starting to become plentiful again, I have another thread on this.

runetang, the AR-15 is the civilian version of the M-16. It is a good gun and despite my affection for the kalashnikov, I would rather have the M-16 in a combat situation. I have a bushmaster and it is great for shooting things at a good distance because of the accuracy. It is a bit harder to maintain than the AK, but nothing terrible. It is functionally very different from the russian guns, so you may need to get a manual for it if you have had no prior expierence.

Nice AK c0le!

Originally posted by ShatteredSkiesIt's a bit off topic, but would anyone happen to know what the laws are on an HK 416 (civil if there is one)?

Shattered OUT...

The HK416 is not available for civilian sale. Hk accidentally released some uppers which were sold through authorized dealers, and proceeded to make a lot of enemies by issuing threatening press notices about what could happen if you were caught with one. These threats were baseless as far as I recall since the uppers were entirely legal for sale, and had not been stolen.

As for the subsequent statement regarding tracers, they are perfectly legal and on widespread sale, unless you live in a foreign country such as California etc.

You can have one for free. Turn 18 and visit your local recruiter. All you have to do is sign a bunch of papers and you get to have one to use Pluss all of the training that you will need to mainatin it.
