Paulding Light... What is it?

For those of you who dont know what I am talking about, The Paulding Light is a mysterious light that appears in the sky near Watersmeet michigan just about every night and is viewed from a road facing directly towards the light...


This Thread is meant to discuss what people think the Paulding Light may be and to bring up any Hypothesis (you cant really test it so it CANT be a theory, please dont misuse this term) you may seem suitable to the thread..




I have had many experiences at this light, and am very freaked out about it!... i have gone there about 15 times in my life ( I know its not that much im sorry)

I have seen "Shadow People" at this light, running around in the brush, on of my friends i was with started freaking out and actualy RAN to the highway and refused to go back near this road after apparently seeing these same "shadow people" i was seeing. ---- I have seen shadow people at least half of the times i have been out at the light

there seems to be "Dark Spots" where you will shine your flashlight, and maybe 5 feet ahead of you will be a person or tree and you will not be able to see it! I experience these every time i go there but they are in random locations every night.

Electronic equipment batteries drain, my Camcorder Camera Cell phone and even walkie talkies seemed to Drain extremely fast as we pulled down the road!!! --- EVERY TIME

my car failed to start after the light came right up to the guard rail changed from White to Blue to Red (this memory sticks out the clearest) i ran to my car AS FAST as i possibly could and it would not start! -----Happened once

After the above experience i FINALY got the the car started and drove home, the whole drive i had this strange feeling i was being followed. for about a week after this experience i had horrible chills and continued seeing shadow people in normal every day environments!!!

No i dont have Pictures, or video, or anything. all i have are my experiences. i would like to hear input from EVERYONE ...

Yea. i have after you get to the other side on the road there is another guard rail.... and eventualy the road turns off to the left and you are left walking throught the woods... im not quite sure the distance ... but in the woods there is sort of a cliff (never climbed down because of the swamp on the bottom) and the one time i walked it the light showed up in the sky directly above us, flared red and we ran back as fast as we could,

i have not walked towards it since then

A few years ago I stumbled on a U.S. documentary concerning the Paulding Light. I cannot recall the title of the programme but the content was quite interesting.
It goes without saying that the researchers were perplexed why/what was the source of this phenomenon and after numerous nights of their vigil they left without any solid scientific explaination.
I believe the Paulding light to be an earthlight. I have witnessed earthlight activity in the area of the Somerset Levels in England in the mid 1990's where peat bogs are found in abundance and they are quite spooky.
Research in this subject comes from various websites. I have listed two which may enlighten (no pun intended) those interested in this area of the unexplained.

This is an odd circumstance because there is a similar light in Crossett, Arkansas that appears on a deserted road in a wooded area that used to have railroad tracks on it, The light is somewhat of a flashlight because it bobs up and down the road as if someone if walking up and down the road looking for something. (As the story goes, the guy is looking for his head every night). Whenever the car comes close to it as you drive off, it dissapears but if you look behind you, its back there steadily searching.

Its also interesting because not only has it been on Unsolved Mysteries but its also been blamed on Swamp Gas although there are no swamps in Arkansas.

i'm going to try to go there this weekend and check it out. I higly doubt the light appears "ABOVE" you as all the stories i've read say it dissapears once you get near it, making it sound more lik e a optical illusion than an actual entity or object. Still definatly intriguing enough to investigate!

Seems to be pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I have not heard of it, and I'm not sure what to make of it, but I thnk you for reporting it her

I've seen the light as well...it was quite a few years ago, however, and I would LOVE to go back. Unfortunately, I live in Pennsylvania now, so my trips to the U.P. of Michigan are quite few and far between.

At any rate, I suggest going to youtube.com and do a search for Paulding Light. There are a couple videos taken of it...one of which is quite good. It shows the light actually flaring up, and it appears to come closer to the camera.

When I saw the light, it didn't do anything spectacular...it looked like it would rise and drop as if headlights from a car going over a hill. But as stated, there are no roads where the light is presumed to be originating from.

Unsolved Mysteries has also been to Watersmeet for a story about the light. One other factoid I've heard is that the light can only be seen from front (i.e. the road you travel down to view it). Helicopters and such have tried viewing it from behind (among other angles) and see nothing.

I will say that I also recall the feeling of being followed when we left that night...perhaps it was just paranoia since I was pretty young (12 years old maybe?), but still, it's interesting to see that someone else has mentioned feeling that way after leaving that place.

that's what I thought too, but there is no road there...no major road anyway. If it were a "back woods" road, there definately would not be that much traffic on it. But again, I don't believe there's a road there since Unsolved Mysteries and Helicopters couldn't figure it out. To the best of my knowledge it is all swamp land...

Here's another issue...you can't hear the cars, if that's what they are. If you've ever lived in the country, you can hear cars from a long way away...this light is pretty far out there...there isn't much else around. I think you'd be able to hear them. And again, there have been helicopters (and I forgot to mention private aircraft...cessna's and what-not) in the sky where the light is seen...someone would have debunked this long ago if it was just cars.

Also, the light does things that you don't see car headlights do...it grows, it rises into the sky, it even appears to come toward you down the telephone wires. Now, some of this could be optical illusion, but it's no illusion I've ever seen from car lights, and I don't see why it would be localized to watersmeet michigan.

after reading that article where do you guys see the flaw in that logic? Sounds like an optical illusion caused by the headlights of cars off of highway 45. I guess i'm planning on making the 6 hour trip anyhow...but it really took the wind out of my sail after reading that article ...no true great mysteries anymore.

Also why would the light NOT be visible from behind but visible from in front? Of course...because the headlights of cars from the highway are in front of the viewing position, it would be impossible to see them with your back facing the origion of the lights. I hope someone can dubunk that article i posted.

Needless to say i'm somewhat dissapointed and think i've effectively debunked the entire phenomona as nothing more than distant headlights. I've never read a story of anyone actually walking the 3-5 miles to the actual area the lights spawn from , so heck, i decided to go alone and find out for myself. Once at the location i found it interesting that friends back at the viewing platform where witnessing lights that i could not see even though i should have been directly below them (optical illusion). Even more interesting was that while looking back at where the crowd was stationed I noticed a car light turn on and proceed to leave, this looking nearly identical to the Paulding LIghts viewed from their reverse perspective. Even more unusual was that a car came down the powerlines road i was on...sat for a moment, turned its brights on a few times, and turned around to leave. To the witnesses 3 miles away this would appear to be a "ghost light". I had to dive in the bushes and hit the dirt so as not to be seen. I have no idea if this was the true perpetrators behind the mystery but i'm extremely suspecious as to their motivation and unusual location to park and to flicker their lights (they had no idea i was hiding 30 feet from them). Anyhow the trip energized me and i'm thrilled to be leaving soon to Utah in order to investigate skinwalker ranch.
