Hi Seekerof!!

Delighted to do so!!

First, WHAT is SETI@home? The web site downlaod page says:

"The SETI@home program is a special kind of screensaver. Like other screensavers it starts up when you leave your computer unattended, and it shuts down as soon as you return to work. What it does in the interim is unique. While you are getting coffee, or having lunch or sleeping, your computer will be helping the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence by analyzing data specially captured by the world's largest radio telescope."

However, you can also configure SETI@home to run constantly rather than as a screensaver only. This will produce more WU's (work units) over time. The time it takes to complete one WU depends on your machine spec: for example, when I *first* joined SETI@home, I had a P3 233Mhz machine with 128Mb RAM which took about 35 hours to process one WU when it ran constantly. Presently I use two machines, P4 2Ghz and 2.6Ghz with 256 and 512 MbRAM respectively, which means I complete about 10+ WU's per day (I also have cable modem, so downloading the next WU is "automatic"). IF all this apeals, then:

You need to download SETI@home:

setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu...

Chose your OS: Windows, Mac, UNIX are supported. File size is around 800kB, so shouldn't take too long to download evcen with 56K modem DUN.

Configure SETI@home - very simple options, such as when SETI can run ie as screesaver or continuosly, how your machine connects ("Always on" or "Ask" (for DUN)) etc. Provision to set a proxy server too.

START cracking those WU's!!

Join the ATS SETI@home team at:

setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu...

and submit those WU's to help *your* team discover ET!!

I hope this helps answer some of your questions - please ask if you'd like more information and I'm sure somebody here will know the answer!!

Go team!!

Hi all!!

Well, very many thanx for the replies from Seekerof, Zerodeep, Britman, Kaoszero, Toejam, ubukate, SpecailasianX, Mountainstar and Tracer - apologies if I've missed naming anybody else? My screen reading days are limited, I feel...

My own reasons for running SETI@home re on my profile, at
setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu... if you haven't read this yet? There is even a photo of me, just to help the MIB's make a positive ID!!

I'd *like* to see ATS really "take a lead" in processing data for SETI, as even "negative" results help eliminate potential areas to watch, and the "new" suite of programs, including BOINC, SETI@home southern hemisphere research and Astropulse, offer the opportunity to get involved with "genuine" scientific research and methods - "our" results can really make an impact to how successful the search for ET - and astronomical anomalies - might be. For "Future Directions", please see:

setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu...

Whilst I know (from reading the discussions on this board!) *some* people are suspicious about *what* SETI@home might contain eg NSA "tracking" trojans or whatever, I can *honestly* say that since joining SETI@home in July 2001 I *haven't* noticed any black vans or helicopters "buzzing" me. I haven't been subjected (yet!) to DOS or hacker attacks and belive that SETI@home is benign. And if it *isn't*, well they were going to get me anyway!!

So, whenever you *can*, please mention SETI@home to those who you contact - as you'll notice I've changed my signature to reflect the group - who knows, *someone* might just be interested enough to find out more??

Thanx again for all the replies - they are much appreciated!!

Go team - and have a relaxing holiday too!!
