Well, in a way any kind of extremism and fanatisism is a form of mental illness.
Normal people have the ability to relativate their views, extremists lack that ability.
I however don't think everyone that falls under the extremist group can be statutory mentaly ill though.
If a person grows to his extremist or fanatical ways naturaly without external presure to do so, hes most likely ill and fixing this is only possible
trough medicine, therapy or when its not fixable, the person belongs in a mental institution (if his extremist views can harm other people).
If a person grows to his extremist or fanatical ways by being pushed trough teaching, information or other influences, the person is usualy not
mentaly ill but brainwashed. In this case, a person can be deprogrammed and become normal again. But if his extremist views led him to partain in a
criminal act, he should first go to jail for what he did.
