I saw the thread about favorite videos, and I'm sure I could at least come up with a video I hate the least, but I just want to sound off on the fact that I hate videos and wonder if there is...

.... anyone else who feels the way I do.

Is there anybody out there?

It seems in the 80's when there was admittedly a lack of good mainstream music, there came MTV and videos etc to boost the corporate music money machine.

Now, at first I liked MTV. Loved MTV. Yep, I had to have my MTV. (Yes, I'm dating myself here, I was a young teen back then)

But it was because, other than the occassional concert (I went to my first rock concert at 13 and tried to go home with Tommy Shaw) or music mag or girlie teen magazine with all the hot musicians posing it up, there really was no way to feel connected to the music or band.

So then comes MTV and not only did you get to hear your music now because of the almighty video, but you got to veg out and watch entertaining little mini-movies staring your favorite musicians all day if you wanted to...or sometimes you'd watch all day just hoping to see a video of your favorite band and all the trash in between was worth it...at first....

Soon it was obvious the music was about the video and the videos were not about music. What a freakin sell out.

I mean to see some artistic expression in special effects occassionally was ok, and to just see a band playing live was cool...I mean who doesn't want to eat Eddie Vedder alive when he's swinging on the rafters over a would-be mosh pit....

Sorry, got lost for a moment...Ok, Pearl Jam...that would be my least hated video.

Anyhoo...., bands were born and bred for MTV and bands who were established had to sell out because they weren't gettin' promoted if they weren't making videos that brought up sales and kept the corporate music money machine cha chinging.

What I hate most about it now is, I'll hear a song and love it....really feel it love the tune, and and identify with the lyrics and it's like a good poem that expresses something you just can't express any other way...then I see the video...and the real interpretation of it, or the band making jackasses out of themselves, or something that ruins the song for me.

I hate music videos because of that. Because they steal the song from me.

I detest all those stupid music vids with half naked African Americans gyrating all over the place and each other. I detest that these are aimed at the real young people who think that it is cool to dress and act like that.

Messing with people's self esteem and contributing to body image illnesses (like anorexia nervosa and bulimia).

Not to mention that all the songs sound the bloody same with the same ghetto type lyrics. Have you ever noticed that a lot of teenagers cant even speak properly ?

Australian TV shows this trash all the time on weekends and lots of teenagers speak with American accents and use american slang. I really hate this.

Give me some wholesome metal and rock (any genres) any day

The Buggles
Video killed the radio star

The first song ever on MTV, and how right they were.
Bands now write soundtracks to whatever video they have in mind, and not songs.
If the music was any good, you wouldn't need a video to distract you from the fact that
most of todays music, and everything on MTV (Moron Television) just plain sucks.
Not that there aren't good bands out there today, there just harder to find.

Another thing I've noticed is the rapid decline of melody in music, which has, in my opinion, vastly accelerated since the debut of MTV. All those rappers and pissed-off screaming white boys-no melody. Just words recited to a beat, and not always on the beat, either.

I once read a book called "Magus Rex" (can't remember the author) where-in the general populace constantly watched something called "jazz-porn". This consisted of loud chaotic music with images of violence, sex, and general pandemonium. None of the video images lasted longer then two seconds. This kept the populace enthralled and quiet, like it was meant to. I see MTV becoming this rapidly.

So in summation, I, too, hate music videos, and wish they had never happened.
They have been greatly detrimental to music in general, and cause me to believe more and more the following quote:

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.
Hunter S. Thompson

LOL I don't know how wholesome any of it is, but yeah, comparitively I KWYM.

I prefer good hard rock, alt or jam rock myself. In the 80's I liked alot of the more "hardcore" stuff or outspoken non-corporate /polititical rock that got mislabled as "punk" so as to sway the opinion of the public of the genre as a whole, or of the bands/ people that used music as an actual platform. Funny thing is...it is used as platform anyway. sadly.

Local bands always ruled, playing for a good time and just trying to make rent, but of course it became infiltrated with what never fails to control and supress "drugs and alcohol for the masses, mind control in the classes" I don't think "classes" always means classrooms at school but classes of people socio-economically.

Amen to that.

Yeah that seems to be it I guess. Honestly I wouldn't know as I just can't watch them anymore and haven't for years.

I hate it when someone asks me "have you seen the video for ______?" instead of asking me if I've even heard or like the song first. WTH?

Sounds like an interesting book-one you'd reccomend, or just one you remembered for the jazz-porn amusement of the masses?

It was an OK book, but nothing that really stood out.
Pretty standard time/dimensional travel story, if I remember correctly, with the hero chasing the uber-badguy from one scenario to the next. I do remember a cool future-Roman empire scene that was pretty neat. Gladiators with technology.

Entertaining light reading, I guess. I read it on a bus from Ca. to Fl.

I am not a fan of music videos or MTV, maybe it's because I'm fairly old(48) and I appreciate musical talent. I don't see any talent in rap, there's nothing there, anyone with a drum machine can be a rap star. I don't see any talent in any of these studio produced, media hyped pop stars either. Before MTV, you actually had to have talent to get a record deal. It's easy to make anyone sound good in a studio. Most of the popular acts nowadays wouldn't be if it wasn't for MTV.

I like video's I just don't spend much time watching TV at all. I watched MTV as a kid a good bit. Nowa days I just listen to the radio and cds I don't fool with it much. There is only so much time in a day after work.

Sounds kind of interesting, but really isn't that where we're at these days anyway? Not exactly killing one another or being fed to lions, but considering the purpose of gladiators....isn't that what we still feed on-amusement?

Not entertainment really, but truly amusement as in keeping the masses amused- a mused, as in not musing-not thinking...braind dead-music video lobotomy anyone?

wow that is old, back then all you had to listen to was like Hank Williams Sr, right?

I'm kidding!!!!

Yeah I hear you, but still I do hear enough that I enjoy, enough that can be destroyed by a video unfortunately-though it's not rap or pop.

It's more "Adult Alternative" stuff, or old grunge/post grunge...discontent rock or harder stuff which would make a music connoisseur cringe! But sometimes some angry rock feels good.

And on the other side, some good old jam rock rock feels pretty good too-but their music isn't dictated by how widely it will be received by mainstream radio and video dictation of what it should be.

Ah, give me acoustic guitars and male 3 part harmony and some decent lyrics and I'm good to go really.

Just don't ruin it by showing me the video...unless it's live performance.
