Kermit the frog once said "It's not easy being green"
Maybe he was right, but on the other hand, workers at China's southwestern Yunnan province at Laoshou Mountain may have just proven him wrong.

Have a look:

From the Guardian UK, via Assiciated Press

Villagers in south-western China are scratching their heads over the local government's decision to paint a barren mountainside green, it was reported today.

Going, Going GREEN!

I see designer mountains in our future.

Wow, I used to think it funny to see graffiti on rocks/boulders/hill sides painted over with earth tone paint, but this....
could underneath be a phrase such as "Our local official is a ******" ?
is there a similar word in Chinese for green that means something else, as in "place the order for 470,000 yuan of shrubs" became "place the order for 470,000 yuan of green paint"?
aha, here it is...a town tourist official started a promotion for everyone to visit the world's largest piece of jade?
another Christo art project?

What a weird way to try and cover a quarry.

Even if they did spend the money on trees I don't see any way that they could have planted them on the rock face. But really, the paint job looks worse than bare rock would have been.

I guess no government is immune to foolish spending.

What is the point in that?? Just worse than it probably looked before.

BTW your title really reminded me of the Hitchiker's guide to the Galaxy:

Space is big. Really big. You can't imagine how mind bogglingly big it is......

apex,
LOL, you're right, really right. That book lingers in my brain all the time.

I wonder what kind of paint they used? I hope it stays stuck to the boulders, and doesn't run off into the streams. Don't drink the green tea.

In all fairness. People in dry climates will resort to similar methods, just to get
a result that looks like a yard. Grass simulants look better, but cost a lot more.
I don't even have any grass in my front yard. Just boulders, and desert plants.
