CD Burner Troubles

I've had my CD burner for a while now and it's always worked. But now everytime I try to burn a disc from iTunes, or Nero or Windows Media, it always says to insert a black disc. So I do...but then it says it's not a blank disc. But I know it is and I try every cd in the pack and they all say there not blank discs. Maybe 1 out of 50 would actually work. But when I try to burn DVD's with the same burner it works.

Any ideas?

One of two things, imo.

1. The laser lens is dirty.

2. The laser is burning out.

But as always, get a second opinion.

Oh yeah, are these quality blank discs that you are using? Or some bargain basement "off brand"?

About how old is your cd burner?

I've tried a number of good quality discs that I've never had problems with before; Maxell, TDK, Memorex.

The burner is about a year old.

And if the lens was dirty or burning out, why would DVD's work?

Thanks

Does that mean that you can burn DVD's, or just play them?

I would have to say that I truly don't know, at this point.

Perhaps one of the computer geniuses here can be of more assistance.

I had a similiar issue a while back. My DVD CD combo drive (yeah, a long while ago) started messing up. CD's stopped working but DVD's played fine. If I remember right, CD's and DVD's use different lasers and the CD laser burned out. (always said insert blank media no matter what. If I put in a disc that had something on it, it said no disc in drive). There was no solution cause it was a hardware falure so I just installed a new drive and problem was solved.
