Forgot all about this til I saw it on The History Channel today. The Peoples Temple was one messed up place. Mass suicide, 900 people I think kill themselves because 1 man told them to. Why is it people are so easily convinced to do something like this? It was supposed to be a nice little community, haha, yeah right, Kool_aid anyone?

Some people become "lost" or maybe "lonely". When some people are spiritually feeble, they sometimes seek out something new, something different, something exciting to fill the gap in their lives. Sometimes their journey brings them to spiritual awakening with God or the total opposite--spiritual awakening with evil. When people are "searching", whoever, whatever, at that time, sounds or looks good to them--they will accept and follow that path.

As you know, many people followed Jim Jones--he brought hope to the lost--he said the "right" things to quench their thirst. Seduction has conqured many a people. BUT, once you are IN--the seduction is over--the brainwashing begins.

These people really did believe Jim Jones was their "saviour" until it was too late. (Some but not all)

It was a devastasing story to hear about. The sickest thing to me--were the innocent children!! Children are so believing of their parents--and in situations like this one--the children probably did not disobey when told to drink the poison. The sickness of a parent making their child kill themselves--actually there are NO words to describe such an autrosity.

Stories like these are ages old--still goes on--nothing we can really do about it. Let's just be appreciative that our own children are safe and sound of mind and try our best to teach them about the evils of mankind.

Well said,
Many members of Aum Shinrikyo, were also on this path, dillusional of thier innnerselves. Seeking compassion through any means necesary.

Do modern day religions not serve a simliar purpose?
