BBC
Plans to build two new prisons - on Merseyside and in London - are to be announced by Home Secretary John Reid.
The prisons, in Maghull, near Liverpool, and next to Belmarsh prison in Woolwich, south-east London, will provide an additional 1,300 spaces.
They are part of plans to provide an extra 8,000 cells over five years.

This is a good start with all the prisoners that are getting out after serving so little time. Especially if they can keep the molesters in side longer. But is it enough

Only 2 prisons. We should be building more and making them a deterent.

Build them underground (why spoil the countryside) and the walls of the cells out of concrete, the thickness depending on the crime, a chisel. When they broke out.....O dear how sad.

And to keep them occupied. Chain gangs to serve the local communities.

And build prisons keeps the building industry ticking over. Good alround!!

More expense for the tax-payer.

I'd far rather see our society model itself on the more equal and law-crime example of Europe, than the high inequality and high crime example of the USA.

This ballooning prison population is costing us dear.

At least post the thread to the duplicate if you are going to accuse me off being 2nd to the plate.

There seems to be some massive logic gaps in these proposals.
If we need more prisons to house a growing number of criminals then surely prisons aren't working as a deterant.
That cycle can't sustain itself. Instead of more prisons and longer sentances we should be looking at exactly who needs to be imprisoned, who doesn't and what sort of rehabilitation is required. It makes no sense to lock away people who sell dope along side people who pose an actual threat to society.

We should be looking at alternatives to prison for non antisocial crimes and forms of rehabilitation within the community for people who's crimes are caused by social / psychological problems...

In fact come to think of it I can't think of a single criminal act that can usefully be dealt with by the lock em up and throw away the key mentality.

As well as murderers, rapists etc,

Maybe it is about high time low level criminals are put in to open prisons, an maybe hight ime more high security prisons we built. Right now the Prison system is in shambles.

This problem is not gonna be sorted until something is done about it. (Can see riots starting in those prisons due to the overcrowding). And yeah Sminkey mean us the the working public will have to pay more taxes .
