A Nicaraguan refugee, Alvro Antonio Orozco, might lose his asylum claim and be deported because he did not have any same sex relationships while in
Canada. He fled Nicaragua when he was 12 fearing his alcoholic father might kill him for being a homosexual. His father had beat him with sticks and
whips prior to his departure.

Alvaro Antonio Orozco based his refugee claim on fears of homophobia and domestic abuse. He said he left Managua in 1998 at age 12 because he was
regularly beaten with sticks and whips by an alcoholic father who threatened to "kill any child of his that was homosexual."
"Gay people in Latin America have to act straight to hide their (sexual) identity because people there are Catholic and are very conservative. I was
afraid," the stocky construction worker said softly. "The (refugee) judge just didn't think I was gay enough and I didn't qualify to be gay."
That someone's gay or not is not going to come across through a TV screen, unless he's visibly queer. But it's the refugee adjudicator's
conviction and belief that Alvaro is not gay enough," said Abualsameed.

Its bad enough this boy, at the time, had to endure physical and psychological damage, but now he has to return to it! He is now a 21 year old and
could possible defend himself, but I still don't think this is right.
Who is in any position to judge whether or not someone is gay enough or not?
Does anyone qualified to make this judgement?
I understand there is a possibility this could all be a plan by Alvaro to grant him refugee status, but would he really lie about something like this?
I mean, he was 12 at the time he left. Is a child able to conjure up a refugee scam like this? Maybe, I am not really sure. What do you think?
