It seems to me that a signifigant amount of brainwashing and indocrination could occur in the myriad of 12-step programs.

No more than any other philosophy, such as relilgion, i.e., Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc. Why do you say this anyway? Do you know much about 12 step groups/philosophy?
