Has anyone followed this story? I remember first hearing about it and thinking it sounded soo erie the fact that the divers were on tethered and the fact that they suddenly dropped in depth make for interesting speculation

Thats not how the initial report sounded. There was mention of a sudden drop inconsistant with swiming.

I just finished the report. The basic mistakes made were:

  • they were wearing too much wieght (60 lbs each)
  • their "tenders" were NOT qualified to control the decent lines
  • the "tenders" misunderstood the control signals
  • the "tenders" had been drinking beer!
So they dropped FAST to around 200 ft when their initial plans (again, not read by their tenders!) were to only hang out at 20 ft!!

The gross part is that they were also pulled up WAY to fast. Their lungs burst on ascent and significant bleeding occured.

This matches up with the blood on the ice after they were pulled from the water:
