If you knew a moderator at a forum was editing member's posts, what would you do?

Would you continue posting at the forum or leave it?

The forum moderator at davidickeforum.com admitted to editing people's posts recently. This is the first time I've heard of such a thing:

What could be worse on a forum than the moderator editing people's posts. I would leave any forum that did that! Can you imagine, there was a guy arrested in the USA recently because of what he posted on a message board. The feds took at as a threat for terrorist activity! With the new laws in the US, the US feds can hunt down anyone anywhere in the world, arrest them and hold them indefinitely and torture them for any or no reason. When a forum moderator admits to editing posts, your putting your life in their hands if you keep posting at that forum. That's just today's reality, anyone who doesn't care about that is dead meat.

It would entirely depend on the circumstances.

Mods here do it all the time. When members post something that violates the Terms and Conditions, for instance. Which is perfectly acceptable, imo.

Now if it is just casually changing the context of the post, or information therein, it is a different ballpark altogether. In that case you should contact the sites administrators. If it is the administrators doing the "editing" then you are basically SOL.

just my 2 cents.

It depends on what was edited.

Mods edit peoples posts here for many jolly good reasons.

If your talking about editting someones post so`s they say something completely different than what they were originally saying, then of coarse thats not on.You should cease posting.

If this is the case can you prove that?

Or are you just going by those quotes in your post?

Edit to add

Mechanic 32 you were quick off the mark!

Well, here at ATS it's really simple.

When one of us edits a member's post it very clearly says at the end of the post that it was edited, when it was edited, and who did the editing.

This is absolutely not something that is under our control. It is part of the board's code and is automated.

As for the editing itself, quite frankly there are thousands of new posts here a day. There are two occasions I can think of where a post is edited.

1) Because content in the post is against the Terms and Conditions of ATS.

2) To fix tags in the post and make things clear (for example a member who botched the quote tags and no one can comprehend his post).

That's pretty much it.

Whatever concerned you about the other site... I can assure you does not and simply can not happen here.

And sometimes (like now) I have to edit my own post because I don't spell perfectly at night

Editors To The Letter

ATS mods do indeed edit posts quite often, but as has already been pointed out, we only do so if there's a good reason justified by the AboveTopSecret.com Terms And Conditions Of Use, which authorize us to make changes at our discretion.

In practice, profanity, personal attacks, personal information, ads, threats, allusions to personal drug use, drug paraphernalia, criminal activity, pornography, solicitations of member information and other violations of the T&C are examples of things we may edit or remove.

Other common reasons for mod edits include correcting gross formatting errors, excessive quoting, oversized images or the notorious "super-long URL sporking the page formatting" issue.

We do NOT, however, indulge in editing posts just because we feel like it, to suppress member opinions or to attempt to mislead anyone, and if any member should suspect this has happened, please include all the details, including the URL of the post in question, in a Complaint.

And of course there's always this forum to air such concerns in a more public fashion.

This was posted at another forum. This could happen to any of us:

I joined a local forum once. It's purpose was so that those of us who live locally could meet. After the first meeting, at a coffe house, I posted what a nice time I had and what nice people I'd met - nothing personal, didn't name any names other than their screen names.

The moderator of the forum changed my post. Rearranged the paragraphs, left out some of the sentences and added a few, which changed the whole intended tone of my post.

I was not happy.

At the next meeting the moderator was there, just as she was at the first one. She asked me why I wasn't posting, anymore, so I told her I didn't appreciate her changing my post.

She got all wild and indignant and said I must be some kind of newbie because everyone knows that's what a forum moderator does.

I had been participating in forums about 3 years before that and it's been about 3 years since and she remains the only moderator who has ever changed one of my posts.

The few times I've seen posts here edited by a moderator it's included the line, "this post has been edited by..." which could serve to get you off the hook if something threatening was posted.

I've always tried to write things that wouldn't need to be edited by a moderator.

conspiraciesabound

So your just copying and pasteing these same posts in different forums.

I`m not happy that I even replied to yours here now.

And you may become Mod bait here for it?(not sure though)

For something you say happened 3 years ago, geez you sure can hold a grudge.

Move on!

They edit to make your stuff look better, or change the forum. Plus they have to make sure it doesn't violate the terms you goined this forum under.

My posts have been moved to other locations sometimes have had messages in them to say why etc but this is due to little things.

One liners for example don't get much tollerance, the problem is I find when you translate pre-posting opinions to posted ones they all look shorter in the mainpage. Also if you write another one liner after another rather than update your post it seems like space wasting. It's easy to do depending how quick you want to be and forget that your post can be edited to fill it up more. The downside is if you do and someone replies your new added sentence may not be read as it is not the last post to reply to anymore.
