Search Ends For Missing Navy Crew, page 1

The United States Navy has called off it's search for three missing crew members. The MH-60S helicopter was on a training mission when it crashed Friday around 5:30 P.M. (EST). One sailor was found alive, but was later pronounced dead. Two sailors were still missing, however Navy officials said the chance of them being alive is extremely unlikely due to the cold water temperatures.

The Navy on Saturday called off a search for three missing crew members of a helicopter that crashed in the ocean about 50 miles off California's southern coast.

Friday's crash during a training mission left one sailor dead, and the Navy had searched for the remaining crew members through the night and into Saturday afternoon.

"The cold water temperature and the time that elapsed since the crash occurred led Navy officials to conclude that aircrew survivability is extremely unlikely," said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Elizabeth Meydenbauer.

It's always tragic when dedicated people die training to protect you. People have survived in very cold weather for long periods of time, and I don't believe that calling off the search was a wise choice. Even if it would have been just to recover their bodies. The cause of the crash is unknown, which is a little bit odd if you ask me.
