What do you guys prefer?
All Wheel Drive
Four Wheel Drive
Rear Wheel Drive
Front Wheel Drive

I drive a 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX which uses AWD. I have to admit that I prefer it to all others as I drive mainly on the highway. It hugs corners like a dream and I haven't even modded the suspension yet.

Here is a general description from Edmunds....

IMHO FR (front engine, rear drive) is the most enjoyable. FF (front engine, front drive) and AWD cars are inherantly prone to understeering. Thats no fun. I admit AWD is fun in the dirt.

It all comes down to personal preference.

for most of my life I've driven front engine front wheel drive cars, and I like them for the control. But rear wheel drive front engine is more fun to play with... I positivelly detest all wheel drive unless I am climbing a hill with the hubs locked on a jeep cj 5

For general purpose driving, front engine, front wheel drive is really the best, in my judgement, not that I'm against rear engine, rear wheel drive, it's just that I don't know of many contemporary examples.

Torque steer and understeer do cut down on some of the pleasure, but understeer is a lot more forgiving than oversteer and, let's face it, most of us don't have the money to wreck a car every couple of weeks just for the thrills.

In snow or mud, having the engine over the drive wheels makes things a lot more pleasant.

I don't have any experience with AWD, so I'll reserve my opinion on those.

Day to day and in dirt/snow, definetly AWD, my Audi A4 is glued to the ground, it's great. Especially on launches off a light, others are spinning tires as I'm taking off it's sweet. But nothing compares to a RWD when it comes to the fun factor.

To those that mention understeer on AWD you're correct, but it's nothing a little suspension tunning can't solve

I own a Subaru and a Jeep Wrangler and a Dodge Ram 2wheel drive 1500..

I LOVE my jeep for the ground clearance and sheer "top off" fun, as well as IMO it is the finest 4x4 ever made...

BUT

The Subaru in my opinion is the absolutely most enjoyable driver I have ever owned and I have owned Camaro Z's, to Ford Escorts... I just got my new state car and it is the New Police Package Impala... SWEET

But the Subaru is Stable, handles like a dream and infallible on bad roads...

Hydroplaning is almost nonexistent and the traction of AWD is phenomenal...

Semper
