Majic Johnson and HIV cure

Hahaha.... Magic Johnson in good shape? Didn't you guys see him when tried to make that comeback with the Lakers, before other players started freaking out about the potential of getting infected?

Dude had to play power forward instead of the point guard position he had previously in the NBA and college, because of his rather "rotund" physique.

But seriously, you guys are right. Although Johnson may not be in "basketball" shape, it's a well-known fact that he lives a rather healthy lifestyle. Couple that with the amount of cash he can spend on treatment and it's no suprise that he's been able to supress the virus for as long as he has.

I remember when Johnson announced that he was HIV positive. I was in elementry school and thought that this would be an instant death sentence for him. I did know much about the virus at the time, and probably still don't know enough about it. I knew how it was transmitted and I knew that it could lead to AIDS and then death.

Anyway, here's hoping to a long life for "Magic". Damn.... 'Magic' Johnson. What a great freaking name. I'm suprised no porn star's tried to take it or maybe one has?

in regards to the evils of drug companies. ill be the first to agree they dont want cures they want treatments.

but pfizer, and im sure others, arent ALL bad. for my condition i take 180 pills of neurontin a month and at the dose im on the retail is $540 if you dont ahve insurance like me. even teh generics are 350/month for just that one prescription.

well for the first 2 years i was on it pfizer sent them to me for free through their connection to care program. essentially if you dont have insurance and make less than 16 grand a year they comp you.

so personally, i cant critisize them much, they helped me make life bearable to a degree.

just dont get me started on the disability system in our country

it is possible, that someone who had hiv positive turns out to be hiv negative after some time. he still does have the hiv virus in his body but it has become type negative. (thats what my chemistry teacher told me, if i remembered it right.) his immune system was somehow able to have a positive influence on the virus. this does not necissarily mean one is able to produce a cure against hiv. but it should be possible to figure out how to virus has changed and then it is likely a method can be found how to actually destroy the virus.

lets say, if we´re able to launch rockets into space, i think we can do that, too.

Actualy he doesnt and has never progressed to full blown AIDS Magic Johnson is HIV positive. There is a difference. People that are HIV positive for the most part are healthy individuals. When it crosses the threashold to AIDS people are starting to get sick from it.

Exactly. I believe people posting in this thread need to do a little research on exactly what HIV Positive and Aids are.

So, to summarize, without antiretroviral treatment, the median time (average) it takes to develope aids is 9-10 years, then another 9+ months of surviving after that. However, it can be up to 20 years before AIDS is developed...and that's WITHOUT TREATMENT.

I believe that we now have the knowledge and tools necessary to keep someone who is newly infected with HIV alive for a normal, healthy lifespan.
