I think that, up to the 1970's, civil servants in England had to swear loyalty to both the crown and the Church of England. I'm an American, and may be mistaken. Googling, all I could find was Elizabeth II's coronation oath:
maintaine the Laws of God the true profession of the Gospell and the Protestant reformed religion established by law [...] and [...] preserve unto the bishops and clergy of this realm and to the churches committed to their charge all such rights and privileges as by law do or shall appertain unto them or any of them
I can't find any copies of such an oath for lesser functionaries; I just remember that puritans and presbyterians were not allowed in certain govt. offices at one point in England's history.
Still, whether or not I got it right, one wonders how the Republic of France would have integrated the peculiar institution of The Anglican Church into its government, having forcibly expelled the Catholic one, and having a majority Catholic population today.
It would be fun to know what French conspiracy theorists have to say about this. If I were a Brit, I'd wonder if it weren't some kind of covert takeover . . . just like that chunnel thingy---trojan horse in Trafalgar Square and all that.
All the best.
