This may not be news to those in the field of military weaponry

On Discovery Channel's Future Weapons they did a program on the
AS50 sniper rifle. The latest development of Accuracy International, Ltd. The rifle is lightweight and easy to assemble.

They showed this rifle can fire 5 consecutive rounds of ammunition in a manner of seconds as opposed to shifting the bolt. The accuracy is great up to 600 yards away. Imagine having one of these in the sandbox.

Semi-automatic sniper rifles aren't new, in fact, they've been around since World War 2.

But the significant reduction in weight should be a good thing, especially in the Middle East, what with all the urban warfare and fast moving battles.

great first episode.
I liked the 2000 yard snipe & the melons behind cement segments.
Show promises some nice toys.

I love how 'ordinary' people respond to this show, no offense meant to anyone BTW. It's just that Barrett did this quite a while ago.

Nice rifles, certainly not cheap either, and the .338 Lapua is a really nice bit of kit.

Only US retailer in the US is in Texas, price list below:

Doesn't Barret have a 50.cal Sniper Rifle that fires semi automatic. I remember watching a report on 60 Mins about the weapons, I know they have bolt action. Pretty crazy

if you wish to start the " we did it first " game :

i give you the japanese type 97 AT rifle

20mm , " portable " < cough > infantry support .

i would have to look through some books to be sure there was no other large caliber semi auto weapon availiable prior to the type 97 , but i doubt it .
