Hi Shugo!!

That's difficult to answer!! Firstly, are you running SETI@home, and if so, what machine(s) are you using and are you using the Client or command line version please? Then *what* average times are you experiencing? For comparison, my old (replaced) P3 233Mhz machine took around 35hours to complete 1WU, which certainly isn't "fast" by any stretch of the imagination?

One thing I think we all do is to run SEI@home *continuously* rather than as a screensaver - this means that the CPU is running the program all the time, unless a process you're working on demands the CPU (if so, S@h "releases" the CPU wihout question - it's a "friendly" program!!)

So, if you could give us some idea of your equipment and the sort of times you are achieving, then I think we could comment further??

It's Version 3.08 with Window XP the current WU average WU length was around 020:26:25.7

SETI is set to run 24/7 or at least while the computer is running and SETI is active.

The computer has 256 MB of memory... and usually 3 programs are running at once excluding SETI.

The processor is a Pentium 4 Processor at 2.0 GHz (Dell DIM2350) the XP version is home.

WOW!! That's not consistent with what you should achieve Shugo - it should be nearer to 6 hours or so.

Have you tried disabling the "Screensaver" in "Display" as I wrote above please? SETI@home "defaults" to this setting and alters your Display properties.

Settings should look something like this:

Does that help?

Could I still run starfield for my screen save?

I really don't know Shugo - here, I *don't* use any screensaver (as you can see from the screenshot above) but I *suspect* that is what is causing the extra long crunching times you're experiencing??

Here, rather than using a screensaver, I simply "power down" my monitor, as a "blank" screen, whilst not exactly interesting, saves the phosphors and screen burn - try disabling the starfield screensaver and see what difference it makes?? If it "speeds up" your crunching time, *that* will prove where the "problem" lies, won't it? (And you can always reset to starfield if you're not happy with the results)?

Good luck!!

Sounds better, doesn't it?!!

Look for a total time around 6 hours Shugo - here I have a variance of around 4 hrs 30 minutes to - sometimes 9 hours (if the WU is complex).

You'll "romp up the team board" much faster!!

I'd like to say that... but now it's taking +5 minutes to climb above that

SETI Status:
WU Completed: 48
Total CPU Time: 970:17:17.9

Patience, Shugo, patience!!

SETI@home is very demanding of CPU time (as you know only too well). Five minutes, as a percentage of 6 hours is around 1.4%... So, please don't expect "instant" results - though they should be faster than the 22 hours or so that you've experienced to date??

***99 359 WU's***

Archive post:

I'm becoming increasingly relient on SETI@work for these stats, as they update with much geater frequency than the ATS SETI@home team board does!!

Latest stats show:

90 Active members : 187 Inactive members, Total WU's completed = 99 359 WU's in 112.874 CPU years as at Thu Mar 25 20:09:47 2004 UTC

BOINC shows 18 active members, with 11 people yet to submit any data. Total credit = 5577.63, with a Recent average credit = 342.17 at 2100 UTC (date as above). ATS BOINC team is now in 34th place out of 874 teams.

Thanx to all - let's go teams!!

It's takin ages for me to turn up any BOINC credit 2 go at a time, and it was weird because for the longest time, the "time remaining" would continue going up on both of them. I should have some credit here in the next half hour or so finally, however. I don't like BOINC very much

I know, each of my "units" that haven't stareted yet say 6 hours and 37 minutes to completion, but mine are averageing about 20-24 hours on BOINC. I don't know what is up with that.

Yeah, exactly. I'm almost to that mark, when it only took 3 hours and 20 minutes on SETI. Strange... It can't be because there is 2 going, that would only result in 7 hours, not 20. Something needs to be changed.

Hi pyxsul/ nyarlathotep

Sorry to hear about your frustration with completing BOINC data As you both know, I'm not running this program myself, so I can't even attempt any explanation of what might be the reason for such slow processing times?

Reading xn's comments, however, I *think* BOINC Beta has debugging code enabled, which the "official" release (when it occurs shortly as milestone 1) won't have, so hopefully processing speeds will increase accordingly?

Hang on in their - all new software is prone to "problems" on it's release - just look at the number of servce patches MS release for it's products!!
