No Tsunami from it, apparently according to the NOAA No Tsunami.

Also, downgraded to 6.7 magnitude.

Looking on Google Earth with the USGS earthquake kml file, theres 4 quakes, not just those two, all within 2 hours of each other, and 38 miles of each other.

I wonder if this might affect the Cascades.

Something would definitely seem to be happening there:

Is it clear whether this happened on land or offshore?

There is a Tsunami bulletin pending (link is that but page not found at present)

EDIT: CNN International covering this now. Apparently 70 miles offshore.

I havent read the thread but does everyone know a whole bunch of planets are aligned right now?

We've had very strong winds here where i am and its weird. I dont think there's a storm nearby.

Anyway, this will be the time when we have to watch out for earthquakes and craziness in the world.

News is saying it's off the coast and only 11km deep... Hopefully there's not a tsunami generated from this one.

Three major earthquakes struck Peru on Wednesday evening -- a magnitude 7.7, then two magnitude 7.5 quakes a moment later, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The first two quakes struck offshore, while the third was on land.

There were power outages in Lima, the capital, and people ran onto the streets in panic as the quakes shook office buildings, Reuters reported.

USGS says 1 quake though, offshore at 47km depth on their site atm however...

When I first checked USGS site, 3 earthquakes were shown, raging 7,5-7,7 magnitude on the Richter scale. According to this page, the ground was shaking 1-2 minutes. My town and its surrounding were once struck by a 6,5 quake, it lasted only for a couple of seconds, and damage was more then evident. If this one in Peru lasted a minute or so, the consequences must be devastating. Even worse then that.

I've tried to link this USGS page showing all 3 quakes, but now it displays 404 file not found.

Anyway, the number of earthquakes is getting weird. A friend of mine is geologist and earthquake fanatic, and he says that we've already 'filled our quota' of quakes for this year, statistically. So, just saying 'nah, it's just seismically active area' doesn't cut in here. This is way too much to be 'normal'.

And BTW, I must admit this 'Earthquake watch' thread really ROCKS

A TSUNAMI WARNING has just been posted for most of South America , including Mexico- according to CNN.

That is because at first the data is not certain. When they get more data, they updates their quake page, often making the old pages "404 missing". Whenever they update their data at USGS, the RSS feed is "bumped" with a new entry. People who are unfamiliar with this and only watches the RSS feed, may believe that there were a lot of earthquakes when there was in fact just one.

I stand corrected, thanks Hellmutt. I've recently put us USGS on my RSS tab, and obviously came to a wrong conclusion.

But then again, here's what FoxNews say:

The first quake, with a magnitude of 7.7, hit about 20 miles west of Chincha Alta, at a shallow 11.2 miles from the earth's surface, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The epicenter was thought to be about 100 miles from Lima.

A second quake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck minutes later, the Associate Press reported.

But I won't be as jumpy as before. This story is still developing.
