The Spanish government has called off completely any peace talk with Basque separatists after a car bomb set by the ETA destroyed a multi-story parking garage at the Madrid International Airport. It is reported that ETA made three warning calls in the hour before the blast in an effort to apparantly not kill anyone. Unfortunately this attack did in fact take the lives of two Ecuadorean men who happened to be sleeping in the garage waiting for their passenger to arrive.

"ETA has evidently broken off the peace process," Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said. The process was "broken, liquidated, finished", he said. The government of Prime Minister Jose Luiz Rodriguez Zapatero had earlier been criticised by opposition parties for suspending peace talks, rather than declaring they were over.

Mr Rubalcaba is expected to meet representatives of the major political parties next week to seek consensus on how to end terrorism, the deputy leader of the governing Socialist Party said.

The huge car bomb on Saturday brought down the five-storey car park at Barajas airport's terminal four. Eta made three warning calls in the hour before the blast, officials said. Rescue teams are trying not to destroy evidence The Ecuadorean men, who were asleep in their car in the car park, are thought to have been trapped when the bomb exploded. The girlfriend of one of the men, who had gone to pick up a passenger, was returning to the car when she saw the explosion, according to an Ecuadorean immigrants' association.

Authorities say it will take several days to clear an estimated 40,000 tons of concrete, under which about 400 cars are thought to be buried.

It does not seem the group was really trying to attack and kill any civilians, considering they made three warning calls, likely an effort to have it evacuated. As of yet these two men are the only reported deaths. I can understand why they may not have been found beforehand, for a bomb that large would have destroyed anyone who would have gone in there looking to evacuate anyone inside.

I find it unfortunate that this group has decided to break off a permanent cease-fire, ending any progress, if any made during the diplomacy. This terrorist act will make them an enemy of the world, if they were not already.

There is video footage in the BBC link, as well as the link I am posting at the end of the article.

There seems to be a simple lesson here.

Don't negotiate with terrorists.

your talking about a country that has already proven it will cave in to terrorists. dont you think eta was watching when spain surrendered to al qaieda and pulled out of iraq? what do you think the lesson was?

causing lots of damage and civilian deaths in spain = terrorists getting what they want.

Seems to have worked out for us in the UK, Grady.

If your not prepared, at least on some level, to talk to your enemy, how do you propose an end to bloodshed?

So ETA again... ETA is run mostly by the MI6... so the british government is making war on itself... yeah great tactic to further propagage the fear in UK and continue towards the police state.

That would be a superb conspiracy theory, but your neglecting one little point...

ETA is a Spanish (or, should I say, Basque) seperatist group.

Ok, maybe the British are running it to keep the Spaniards of Gibraltar....

Oops... Sorry. Maybe there's also a conspiracy with the ETA? Anyway, I was talking about the other ``terrorist`` organisation in Britain not this one in Spain...
