As part of our Messages from Earth project, The Planetary Society, in conjunction with The Planetary Society of Japan and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), invites the world to participate in the "Wish Upon the Moon" campaign to send names and messages to Earth’s Moon on Japan's SELENE mission. Adults and children alike can submit names and brief good wishes for inclusion on the spacecraft.

The name and message will be printed on a special aluminum foil
sheet and stored aboard JAXA'a SELENE lunar probe.

The end day for submissions is February 1st 2007.

Send Your Name Aboard SELENE.

I think this kind of thing is very cool, and a good way to make
the average person feel that they are apart of the space program.

SELENE, which stands for SELenological and ENgineering Explorer,
is the largest mission to the Moon since the Apollo missions.

It is a project of the Japan Aerospace eXploration Agency.

SELENE will carry a high definition TV camera that will film a movie
of Earthrise and transmit it back to Earth.
SELENE will also carry out lunar research and science.

Mine is already on the polar cap on Mars. The moon ... well ... it's just too domestic for my tastes!
Just teasing! Seriously, my name IS on Mars, along with a few hundred thousand other names, that NASA put together and put on a probe that went up there.

My message for the lunar shot would be to the aliens on the dark side (cuz' I just know they'd read whatever we sent up) -

Dear Aliens - please let the entire planet know that you exist. Love, FlyersFan. P.S. we taste terrible so if you are planning on using us as a food source, don't. We would give you indigestion.

Hey, thanks for the heads up, this is the first I'd heard of this mission.

I sent my fathers name to smash into a comet a while back and he got a big kick out of it. I've added his name to the SELENE mission and will send him the certificate to tack to his fridge and show his friends. He loves this stuff...

You just made an old man very happy.

The Phoenix Mars mission has a Feb. 1 2007 deadline if anyone wants to add your name to that one too.

Erm, purpose of the thread, or purpose of the project?

The purpose of the thread is to tell people who are interested.

The purpose of the project is so that people can send some part of themselves into space, it not only lets people feel like there part of
space exploration, but also makes them feel that some memory of
them will live on for a very long time.

Oh, and I suppose I'll post this, what I put:

NAME: Iori Shibiru Komei
MESSAGE: Per ardua ad astra.
(Through difficulties to the stars.)
