Siena's mini-recovery ended on Saturday as visitors Udinese claimed a 3-2 win that significantly boosts their Champions League ambitions.
Siena, who had beaten AC Milan and Roma in the week preceding, equalised on two occasions through first Massimo Maccarone and then Rodrigo Taddei
after David Di Michele had twice given the men from Udine the lead.
However, there was still time for Vincenzo Iaquinta to steal the points for Udinese who move back up to the fourth place that would mean Champions
League football at the end of the season.
However, Sampdoria can reclaim fourth place with a win on Sunday at home to Roma.
Siena, meanwhile, are three points above the relegation zone with five matches still to play.
