A depleted Real Madrid were unable to capitalise on Barcelona's surprise draw at bottom side Numancia after they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Deportivo La
Coruna.
Albert Luque opened the scoring in the eighth minute and the 2000 champions' lead was doubled when Francisco Pavon headed over Iker Casillas and into
his own net five minutes later.
Barcelona stretched their advantage at the top over their great rivals to eight points despite falling behind to a Juanlu bicycle kick at the end of
the first half against Numancia at Soria. Rafael Marquez salvaged a point in the 46th minute for the Catalans who were some way below their best on a
frosty pitch.
Levante ended their two-game goal drought to pull further away from relegation danger and keep Mallorca just one place off the bottom of the table
with a 2-1 away win. Mallorca led through Luis Garcia's 10th minute goal but Levante hit back with strikes from Sergio and Jofre.
They are now seven points clear of third-bottom Albacete who lost 2-1 at Espanyol. Maxi Rodriguez and Raul Tamudo had put the hosts in the driving
seat before a second-half goal from Antonio Pacheco forced Miguel Angel Lotina's side to hang on until the end.
