Teenage golfing star Michelle Wie has accepted a special exemption to compete in the British Open at Royal Birkdale from July 28-31.

Organisers said today that 15-year-old Wie was one of five amateurs entitled to play in what is one of the four top tournaments in women's golf.

When she tees off at Royal Birkdale outside Liverpool, the American will be making only her second competitive appearance in Britain, following her first experience of links golf in the 2004 Curtis Cup match at nearby Formby.

There she won both her singles but was defeated in both foursomes. The field for the women's British Open, which was designated one of the four major championships in 2001, is set at 144. The exemption offer means that Wie, one of the biggest draws in the sport, will play in all four of the majors.
