Police were today investigating after a mobile phone was thrown on to the pitch after England striker Wayne Rooney fired Manchester United ahead against Liverpool at Anfield.

One spectator was arrested but it was not confirmed that it was the same person who threw the phone, a Merseyside Police spokesman said. The incident happened as former Everton striker Rooney celebrated in front of opposition fans after Liverpool keeper Jerzy Dudek had blundered, allowing Rooney's long-range shot to pass underneath him.

The police spokesman said: "We have recovered a mobile phone from the pitch. We are not sure whether it was thrown at anybody. We are making inquiries.

"One person has been arrested for a throwing incident but I am not sure whether it was connected."

An FA spokesman, who said he had not seen the incident, added: "Obviously we will study any reports from the game, as we would any game."

It should be Rooney who's being charged for inciting the fans, after he scored he 'celebrated' to the Kop, pulling stupid faces and winding them up. A f@#king disgrace of a human being, doing that can cause riots and he should know better.

well. wayne the pain aint getting a rap

Wayne Rooney will not face any censure from The Football Association for his goal celebration at Anfield on Saturday.

The Manchester United ace scored the only goal against Liverpool at the weekend and ran over to the Kop to celebrate his first half strike.

He cupped his ears at the Reds faithful, who had been constantly jeering the former Everton starlet from the moment Rooney started warming up.
