In todays only game, Celtic ended 2004 as they had begun it - as the top team in the Bank of Scotland Premier League.

Goals from Aiden McGeady and Stilian Petrov were enough to beat Hearts 2-0 at Tynecastle and the home side knew they could have suffered an even heavier defeat.

The result allowed the champions to open up a four-point lead that Rangers will be aiming to reduce to just one by beating Motherwell at Ibrox.

Recent displays by Martin O'Neill's side had been labelled sub-standard but they were always on top in this one and the young McGeady was the centre of attention.

His ninth-minute strike was further proof of his much-heralded potential, an emphatic blast past Craig Gordon from beyond the back post after Petrov had set up the chance with some high energy play down the right that included a low ball across the box that no defender could cut out.

Petrov wrapped the game up in the 69th minute when he smashed home a Chris Sutton nod-down following a ball in from the left from Ulrik Laursen.
