Miguel Cotto retained his WBO light-welterweight title and stretched his unbeaten run to 22 fights with an impressive stoppage of Randall Bailey in Las Vegas.

The highly impressive Puerto Rican wore down former champion Bailey before the action was stopped on the advice of the ringside doctor half-way through round six. Gutsy Bailey had sustained bad cuts around both eyes and complained he could no longer see clearly as Cotto rammed his advantage home. The Puerto Rican rode a couple of fine overhand rights from Bailey in the first round then went on to prove why he is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in the division. Cotto's sharp work to the body had Bailey on the back-foot throughout the second round and a stabbing right up close in the third dropped the challenger to his knees. Bailey hit the canvas in the fourth round after a left hand which increased the damage around his eyes. And as Cotto stepped up the pace Bailey's chances of extending the fight beyond half-way quickly diminished. The 23-year-old Cotto - who is now being lined up for a bout early next year against former champion DeMarcus Corley - proved why he is one of the most promising fighters in the business. Bailey said: "He is a strong kid and he was better than I thought. It is not his power but the volume of his punches."
