Heerenveen consolidated fifth place in the Eredivisie table with a narrow 1-0 win in the derby match against Groningen on Friday night.
Mika Vayrynen netted the game's only goal midway through the second half to snatch three points for Gert Jan Verbeek's side.
Groningen almost got off to the perfect start when Hugo Alves Velame played Mathias Floren in on the edge of the area after just two minutes.
Floren fired in a low first-time shot but it drifted wide of the left-hand post.
Heerenveen's best moment of the first half came on the counter-attack after 17 minutes.
The hosts began to apply the pressure after the break, with Yildirim again at the heart of most of their good work.
The home fans did not have to wait too much longer for the crucial goal, though.
After 66 minutes, Yildirim's through ball found the run of Vayrynen, who skipped through the Groningen backline and placed a low shot to keeper Bas
Roorda's right and into the bottom corner.
