Jim Fregosi fell two wins short of leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a World Series championship 11 years ago. He wants to finish the job.

Fregosi returned to Philadelphia on Tuesday to interview for the Phillies' vacant managerial position. He was the fifth candidate to interview for the job after Larry Bowa was fired.

"They have a very good ballclub. They have talent. They need more of a team aspect," said Fregosi.

Fregosi led the Phillies to the 1993 NL pennant before losing to Toronto in six games in the World Series.

The Phillies already have interviewed former managers Don Baylor, Charlie Manuel, Grady Little and Buddy Bell. They will interview former Phillies first-round pick John Russell on Wednesday, Braves hitting coach Terry Pendleton on Thursday and former Pittsburgh, Florida and Colorado manager Jim Leyland on Monday. Fregosi, 62, has spent the last three years working for Atlanta as a special assistant to general manager John Schuerholz. He's posted a career record of 1,028-1,095 in 15 seasons as a manager with the Angels, Chicago White Sox, Phillies and Blue Jays.

"One thing I've always wanted to do was win a championship," Fregosi said. "I think I have the experience and I have what it takes to get them to that level."

Fregosi took over as Philadelphia's manager when Nick Leyva was fired early in the 1991 season. He led the Phillies to a winning record just once (1993) in his six seasons. Phillies general manager Ed Wade was an assistant to GM Lee Thomas when Fregosi was fired after the 1996 season. He called Fregosi "a good friend" and "a very serious candidate."

I wonder if he'll be a popular pick with the fans, I think he would be. What do you think, PA?
