Newz Forum: FOOTBALL: COLLEGE: Florida State remains ahead of Wisconsin

Florida State was the only one of the top five schools to struggle Saturday, but the Seminoles retained their No. 5 spot in the latest ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll released Sunday.

Florida State (6-1) rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to beat Wake Forest, 20-17 and remains ahead of unbeaten Wisconsin (8-0), which is still No. 6 after a 24-12 victory against Northwestern.

Southern California (7-0) maintained the No. 1 ranking after a 38-0 rout of Washington. The Trojans received 49 of a possible 61 first-place votes and 1,513 points.

Second-ranked Oklahoma (7-0) beat Kansas, 41-10, and gained a first-place vote in the process, increasing its total to 11 along with 1,469 points.

Third-ranked Miami (6-0), which defeated North Carolina State, 45-31, has the other first-place vote. The Hurricanes are ranked second in the BCS, ahead of Oklahoma.

Auburn (8-0) remained unbeaten with a 42-10 rout of Kentucky but also stayed in the fourth spot in the poll.

Georgia (6-1) struggled to a 20-14 victory against Arkansas and slipped one place to seventh.

California (5-1), Texas (6-1) and unbeaten Utah complete the top-10. California routed Arizona, 38-0; Texas pounded Texas Tech, 51-21 and Utah walloped Nevada-Las Vegas, 63-28. Texas Tech, which was 24th, dropped out of the poll.

Michigan (7-1) beat Purdue, 16-14 in a pivotal Big Ten Conference game and remains at No. 11. It was the second straight loss for Purdue (5-2), which slipped seven more spots to No. 19.

Tennessee (6-1) is 12th followed by West Virginia (6-1), Virginia (6-1), unbeaten Boise State (7-0), Louisville (5-1), Texas A&M (6-1), Louisiana State (5-2), Purdue and Oklahoma State (6-1).

Arizona State (6-1) and Virginia Tech (5-2) are at 21 and 22, respectively, and Minnesota (6-2), Iowa (5-2) and Southern Mississippi (5-1) joined the poll in the last three spots.

Florida (4-3) dropped out after losing at Mississippi State, 38-31. Notre Dame, which lost to Boston College, 24-23, also was knocked out.
