Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians have designated pitcher Chad Durbin for assignment and have recalled 2002 top draft pick Jeremy
Guthrie from Double-A Akron.
Durbin was 5-6 with a 6.66 earned run average in 17 games, including eight starts, for the Indians this season. He took the loss in Thursday's 14-9
setback to the White Sox, allowing six runs on five hits in just two-thirds of an inning.
Guthrie was the 22nd overall pick of the 2002 draft. He was 8-8 with a 4.21 ERA in 23 appearances, including 21 starts, at Akron after posting a 1-2
mark with a 7.91 ERA in eight starts at Triple-A Buffalo.
The 25-year-old righthander was the Pac-10 pitcher of the year at Stanford in 2002. He is expected to work out of the bullpen with the Tribe.
The Indians also recalled pitcher Kazuhito Tadano from Buffalo and optioned pitcher Fernando Cabrera to the Triple-A club.
Tadano was 1-1 with a 4.95 ERA in 12 games, including four starts, with the Indians earlier this year.
Cabrera made his major league debut earlier this month and appeared in two games.
