Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - St. Louis Cardinals reliever Julian Tavarez was suspended for 10 days on Tuesday for applying a foreign substance to
baseballs while pitching. Bob Watson, Vice President of On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.
The incident occurred in the first game of a Cardinals-Pirates doubleheader last Friday. Tavarez was ejected by umpire Joe West after a substance was
discovered on the pitcher's hat. The substance is believed to have been pine tar.
In 61 appearances, Tavarez has a 5-3 record with a 2.49 ERA and three saves for St. Louis, which owns the best record in the majors.
Unless appealed, the suspension will start with Tuesday night's Cardinals-Reds game.
