ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Italy booked its berth in the men's Olympic volleyball quarterfinals Saturday with a straight sets win over the Netherlands. The
Italian's 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) win means that the United States also qualifies from Pool B, after the Americans defeated Australia 3-1 (25-19,
23-25, 25-13, 25-19) earlier Saturday.
Poland played itself to the verge of qualification with a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23) win over Tunisia. Tunisia is now out of medal contention.
Andrea Sartoretti led Italy with 11 points, while Samuele Papi and Matej Cernic scored 10 points each.
Richard Schuil scored 16 points as the only Dutch player to reach double figures.
"It was not the perfect match, but it was clear," said Italian head coach Gianpaolo Montali. "I am happy for two reasons. First, because we won, and
second, because we qualified."
Later Saturday, Argentina played Serbia-Montenegro, Greece faced France and Brazil met Russia.
