Athens, Greece (Sports Network) - The United States men's beach volleyball team of Dax Holdren and Stein Metzger upset Germans Jonas Reckermann and
Markus Dieckmann 21-16, 19-21, 15-13 Friday to advance to the quarterfinals.
With the victory, Holdren and Metzger will play the winner of the match between fifth-seeded Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel of Switzerland against
Joao Brenha and Luis Brenha of Portugal Sunday.
"I think that was the worst I have played since I have been at the Olympics," said Metzger after the match. "I was feeling out of breath the whole
game, didn't have a lot of energy and usually my role is yelling and screaming, keeping the team charged up. Today it was Daxton's turn to do that."
The U.S. women play Saturday as top-seeded Misty May and Kerri Walsh face Tian Jia and Wang Fe of China. Fourth-seeded Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs
will face Eva Celbova and Sona Novakova of the Czech Republic.
