ATHENS, Greece (sports tickler) - Venus Williams and Andy Roddick came out with a greater sense of purpose in singles Tuesday.
Andy Roddick beat German Tommy Haas 4-6, 6-3, 9-7. Meanwhile, Venus, the defending singles gold medalist needed a mere 39 minutes in second round
play to dispose of Maja Matevzic of Slovakia, 6-0, 6-0.
Williams and substitute partner Chanda Rubin lost in the first round of the doubles Monday to a team from China. Rubin was filling in for Venus
sister Serena, who withdrew from the Games with a knee injury.
Rubin is still alive in singles after her win over Cara Black of Zimbabwe, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
American Lisa Raymond also moved on to the third round with ease by defeating Silvia Farina Elia of Italy, 6-1, 6-2.
