Athens, Greece (Sports Network) - American medal favorites Dain Blanton and Jeff Nygaard were beaten Monday by Canadians John Child and Mark Heese in
Pool E action of the men's Olympic beach volleyball tournament.
Child and Heese, the 1996 bronze medalists in Atlanta, rolled to a 21-16, 21-10 victory over their American opponents, moving a step closer to
qualifying for the 16-team single elimination bracket of the competition.
The loss probably leaves defending Olympic champion Blanton and Nygaard out of contention for a medal. Americans have won both gold medals awarded
since beach volleyball was added to the Olympics in 1996.
In other U.S. matches on Monday, Dax Holdren and Stein Metzger rallied back from a match point against them to defeat Australians Andrew Schacht and
Joshua Slack, 2-1 (22-24, 24-22, 15-13), while women's team members Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs beat Canadians Guylaine Dumont and Annie Martin 2-1
(21-13, 12-21, 15-9).
