Penny stiff, but improving, says Tracy

Associated Press

CHICAGO - The Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday placed right-hander Brad Penny on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right bicep.

Penny injured himself making his second start for the Dodgers on Aug. 9 against Philadelphia. Penny, acquired in a trade with Florida on July 30, left the game after throwing only 14 pitches.

Penny joined the NL West leaders just before the trade deadline in a deal that sent Paul Lo Duca, Guillermo Mota and Juan Encarnacion to the Marlins.

In his debut with the Dodgers on Aug. 3, Penny held Pittsburgh to two infield hits over eight scoreless innings. He is 9-9 with a 3.02 ERA this season.

"He is better and he's making improvements but he still has some stiffness in that area from moving up into the lower part of the bicep," Dodgers manager Jim Tracy. "So as far as actually going out and doing any kind of tossing or throwing on the flat ground, as of this morning we do not have any specific timetable in mind as far as that is concerned."

The move is retroactive to Aug. 9.

Also, Los Angeles purchased the contract of left-handed reliever Mike Venafro from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Venafro began the season in Triple-A Omaha under the Royals minor league system. He was 2-4 with a 4.37 ERA in 35 games. He pitched in two games for Las Vegas.

My comment:

Dangit, this trade is supposed to be make us better for the postseason. All I have to say is we better make the postseason because the way the scores are going today, we're going to lose another game to both the Giants and the Padres.

At least it's retroactive to Aug. 9 which means he should miss only one more start.
