Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Colorado Avalanche forward Milan Hejduk was awarded a $5.7 million contract for the 2004-05 season after an arbitration hearing on Thursday.

Hejduk, who earned $3.2 million last season, posted 35 goals and 40 assists in 82 games for the Avalanche in 2003-04.

The 28-year-old native of Czechoslovakia captured the Maurice Richard trophy as the NHL's top goal-scorer in 2002-03 after posting 50 goals.

Hejduk was the 87th overall pick of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He has 197 goals and 219 assists in 470 career games.

That really sucks. The Avs are getting ripped off, paying for that huge contract. I don't think Hejduk is worth the 3.2 he got last year.

The arbitrators seem to be working against the players. The owners will use salaries like this to argue for some sort of cap.
